Sushmita Sen is identified as the gem in Indian cinema. The former Miss Universe has captivated generations of audiences with her charismatic personality, unmatched acting prowess, gorgeous beauty and whatnot. While her professional feat through films doesn’t require any introduction, Sushmita has also won millions of hearts for her efforts towards philanthropy and humanity. For the unversed, she was one of the youngest women in our country to adopt two beautiful daughters, Renee and Alisah.
In a recent interaction on Pinkvilla’s Masterclass, Sushmita Sen opened up about the troughs and crests she witnessed in her career back in the 90s. The actress talked about gender-based parity in the film industry and remarked being labelled as ‘difficult’ back then, since she used to ask a lot of questions about work. Adding how women weren’t considered to interact and share queries, Sushmita said:
“Opinionated absolutely, I have faced. But agar aap har cheez ke baare mein agree nahi karte in the 90s, whatever it is. If you as an actress asked for ki role mein karna kya hai, you are difficult as an actor to deal with. Aap bahut jyada sawaal jawaab karte ho. Aurton ko nahi karna chahiye.........Galatfehmi. Sawaal hai jaroor kijiye."

Continuing with her thread of narration, Sushmita Sen then revealed that she had always remained her true self in the film industry, no matter what. She mentioned not having faked her personality at any given point, and mentioned that she loves being her authentic self. However, when it comes to the competitive field of movies, such a personality trait is not easily acceptable. Talking more along the same lines, Sushmita opened up on the tough situations she faced as a result of her authenticity and revealed:
"If you are authentic, it's not a choice; it's who you are. So it's not like someone has to give you permission or approval to be who you are. If you're a unique person, then you will stand out as a unique person. Is it tough being me? Hell yeah. Of course, it is. I don't deal with it now. I accept it. But I am a very blessed person. My entire life has been spent being famous, so it's been about people, human interactions, opinions, and judgments. But at the end of the day, I have met very few people in this world who are as loved as I am.”
In one of her earlier interviews at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2023, Sushmita Sen opened up about her career and reflected on whether she got type casted for doing the same type of roles over and over again. The diva mentioned that she did get stuck with the monotony of roles, which is why she decided to take a willing hiatus from acting. Further, she revealed that once she was back from her sabbatical, she easily transformed herself into a student again, who learnt the art of acting from scratch.

Speaking about her personal life, the 48-year-old powerhouse of talent is still unmarried and happily single, while enjoying herself in the company of her daughters, Renee and Alisah. However, time and again, she has impeccably garnered attention, due to her relationship with actor, Rohman Shawl. Even after announcing their breakup a few years ago, their continued appearances with one another fuel rumours of their rekindled relations. Previously, in an interview with Film Companion, Sushmita spilled beans on marriage and said:
“I know the whole world thinks I should give a damn about, at this stage at least, settling down. I don't give a damn about it. Important to mention it's only because I love and respect the institution of marriage. I do, very much. And I have the blessing of knowing some incredible people, including my (Aarya) director (Ram Madhvani) and my producer (Amita Madhvani), who are one of the most beautiful couples I know."
