In 1994, Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai competed against each other in the Miss India pageant before winning the titles of Miss Universe and Miss World, respectively.
Aishwarya was the favourite contestant of the judges, and she was already a very well-known name due to her modelling career. However, Sushmita Sen wasn't as famous then.
However, Sushmita eventually beat Aishwarya and was crowned Miss India in 1994. Both actresses have enjoyed successful Bollywood careers since their run in the prestigious Miss India pageant. However, Sushmita Sen had the ideal response when asked if she deserved the title over Aishwarya.

Sushmita once appeared in the show, Koffee With Karan, in 2005, and the host, Karan Johar, questioned her if she believed she deserved to win the Miss India title that evening. Sushmita replied in one word, "Definitely". Karan further asked if she compared her performance with that of Aishwarya Rai. Sushmita responded to this by stating that she didn't hold Aishwarya's performance against her and that Aishwarya deserved to win. She thought Aishwarya was fabulous on stage. Sushmita continued by saying that she had been crowned Miss India not because she was better than Aishwarya but because she was her best self. Talking about the same, Sushmita Sen said:
“I don't compare myself to Aishwarya's performance. I think she was fabulous on stage. I do believe in two things: One, that night, I was the best and that's why I deserved to win, not because I was better than someone else. It is only because I was at my best.”
She further elaborated on the same and gave one more reason why she won the title that night. Sushmita continued by saying she had more luck that night than everybody else. Her shooting star flew straight over her head, which can be very significant when you're vying for something. She added that it wasn't only her who put in an effort; other girls also worked just as hard as her. Sushmita Sen also feels she had a little luck, which helped her win the title. She said:
“And the other, I think I was luckier than everyone else that night. My shooting star went right over my head, and that's an important thing at times when you are competing for anything. It's not just your hard work because there are 20-30 other girls who put in equal or more amount of hard work. It is also that dash of luck I had that night.”
