The Princess of Wales, Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, better known as Kate Middleton, has been absent from the public eye ever since she underwent abdominal surgery in January 2024. Kensington Palace has announced that the princess will return to her royal duties after Easter 2024. However, her absence has caused quite a stir in the media, and the public is eager to know about her whereabouts while speculating on various theories regarding her disappearance. In her absence from the limelight, let's look back at the time when Prince William and Kate Middleton visited India.
Kate Middleton came to India for the first time in 2016 accompanied by her husband, Prince William. During their trip, the British royals met some of the renowned Bollywood celebrities as they attended a charity ball held at Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. For the event, Kate was dressed in a royal blue floor-length gown embellished with beads and sequins, and Prince William opted for a more formal look in a tuxedo.

The ball saw the attendance of Indian cinema royals such as Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Karan Johar, Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and many more. One of the highlights of the charity gala was the interaction between the British royals and the Baadshah of Bollywood. As per a report by NDTV, during the promotion of his film, Fan, SRK talked about his interaction with Prince William and Kate Middleton. Revealing how he forgot what ‘paalak’ was called in English, SRK revealed:
“At dinner, I tried to explain the dishes they were eating. I don’t know food very well and one time I tried to explain what ‘paalak’ is in English was. I was looking around for someone to tell me what paalak is in English. I didn’t want to disappoint them with my lack of knowledge of food.”
Later, in an interview with an international media outlet, Shah Rukh Khan recalled his meeting with William and Kate, and said it was very nice meeting them. During the interaction, King Khan also mentioned that both the royals were nice and looked beautiful and were wonderful. SRK said:
“The royal highnesses were wonderful. They were very gracious, very beautiful. I spent a lot of time with them. They are very cool, very kind and very normal which is unexpected perhaps. I've met some royalty before but they were of the older generations and there is a certain amount of respect there anyway but this was really easy and they were like a regular young couple. They were very, very sweet. I am quite a fan of the royal highnesses."

During his speech at the event, Prince William reminisced about the time when his wife, Kate Middleton revealed that she wanted to visit India. He termed the charity event as “wonderful and colourful evening”. In his speech, the Duke of Cambridge mentioned that he was honoured to be in the country. In his words:
“It has been a wonderful and colourful evening. It has been a real treat to be welcomed to India in this way. When Catherine and I got married, India was the first place on her list, and she told me she wanted to visit. Two children and five years later, we finally made it, and we are quite honoured to be here.”
