Sonam Wangchuk's Wife Gitanjali's Request To Shift Him To A Private Hospital Rejected By Delhi HC

Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali Angmok, has filed a petition in the High Court and has requested permission to transfer her husband to a private hospital of her own choice. Gitanjali, the wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has accused Safdarjung Hospital of providing her with misleading medical information regarding Wangchuk's indefinite hunger strike. Delhi HC declines interim relief on Gitanjali's plea.

Delhi HC declines Gitanjali Wangchuk's plea for shifting Sonam Wangchuk to a private hospital

The Delhi High Court declined to pass an interim order regarding Sonam Wangchuk being shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to a private hospital. The court observed that such a direction could not be passed at this stage. Justice Mini Pushkarna noted that the court had to consider the larger picture when Gitanjali filed a plea. The judge noted:

"Every life is precious. Considering this, no interim order is required to be passed at this stage."

The court also observed that Sonam Wangchuk was not in detention and that his wife, brother and brother-in-law were given access. The court also noted that the family was given a separate room so that they could spend time with him. The court has also directed the authorities to file a fresh report related to Wangchuk's health, and the matter will be heard on July 24, 2026.

Delhi High Court doesn't agree on discharging Sonam Wangchuk from Safdarjung to a private hospital

Gitanjali J. Angmo, the wife of Sonam Wangchuk, earlier on X had penned on how she had lost faith in Safdarjung Government Hospital. The hospital told them that Sonam's potassium had dropped to 2.9, describing it as alarming and life-threatening. Yet, in its public health bulletin, it conveniently omitted the actual number, referring only to "decreasing potassium levels." After 10 hours and repeated requests, they allowed them to take samples of his blood at 10.30 pm.

An independent laboratory test reported 3.5, well within the normal range. Despite repeated requests, the hospital had refused to discharge him or allow Geetanjali to shift him to a private hospital of their choice. Now it seems that Gitanjali did not get justice as the Delhi HC, in an emergency hearing didn't allow Wangchuk to be admitted to a hospital of their choice. Earlier Gitanjali had taken to X to write:

"The writ petition that was filed at 4 am seeking discharge of @Wangchuk66 from Safdarjung to a hospital of our choice this morning has been granted an emergency hearing by the # DelhiHighCourt. The case has been listed at 2.30 pm before Justice Mini Pushkarna! We have full faith in the judiciary and the High Court of Delhi!! Thank you  @VTankha ji, @KapilSibal ji and Bahuli Sharma for once again helping us pro bono and fighting for us and our rights!"

Sonam Wangchuk wants Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign after the NEET 2026 paper got leaked. His wife has been his biggest pillar of support as Wangchuk has been fasting since June 28, 2026. Gitanjali had earlier revealed how around 30 police personnel are stationed on their hospital floor and 100 across the entire hospital. She shared:

"It is not medical care. It is illegal detention. If anything happens to Sonam, the hospital authorities and the government must bear full responsibility. I have therefore moved the High Court and sought an urgent hearing today, praying for permission to shift Sonam before his health deteriorates further. No family should have to fight the system simply to choose where their loved one receives medical care."

According to social media reports, Sonam Wangchuk's vital parameters were earlier stable, and his blood parameters were earlier marginally altered. He required round-the-clock monitoring along with medical intervention.
