Shivangi Joshi's Sister Slams Trolls Over Actress's 'Bread-Butter' Story, 'Problem Ghar Dekh Ke...'

Shivangi Joshi is once again in the midst of a social media storm. This time it is due to her emotional revelation about her family’s financial condition on Netflix’s Lock Upp: Sach Ya Saza. Her emotional confession resonated with many viewers, but some have accused the actress of fabricating the story for sympathy. Now, Shivangi’s sister Sheetal Joshi has come out in strong support of Shivangi.

What was the controversy about Shivangi Joshi's recent confession?

During the “secret reveal” task, Shivangi revealed a secret that she never thought of revealing before in one of the tasks on Lock Upp 2. The actress spoke about a time in her family after her father had faced a big business loss. Her parents worked at a canteen, stitched clothes, and washed utensils to keep the household afloat; the family could barely make ends meet. She shared:

"They always felt ashamed about not being able to provide food to the family. I am the only one who earns in my family, and I take care of everybody. After going through that phase, I decided never to go through it again."

Her mention of surviving on "bread and butter" quickly went viral online, though not necessarily for the right reasons. Social media users soon dug up clips from an old interview in which Shivangi had said her father served in the Army. With her latest account in the reality show, many users accused the actress of creating a sob story for sympathy.

Shivangi Joshi's sister strongly defends her family's story

Shivangi's sister, Sheetal Joshi, has come out strongly in her defense, insisting that their family "lived through" the hardships and that people have misunderstood her story. Taking to her Instagram, Sheetal urged people to stop calling her sister a liar. She pointed out that many viewers were linking Shivangi's confession to an old interview without understanding the complete context. 

Sheetal explained that Shivangi never claimed her family had been poor from birth. In fact, the actress was referring to a difficult period after their father suffered heavy business losses, which left the family in severe financial distress. She addressed the trolls, saying:

"Sabse pehli cheez secret woh cheez hoti hai jo kisi ko pata nahi hoti hai. Tabhi woh secret hoti hai. Ab baat karte hain uski bread butter wali. Usne apne secret mein yeh kahin mention nahi kiya hai ki hum paidaishi bahut gareeb the. Usne yeh cheez boli hai. Hamare papa ko business mein bahut bada loss hua tha. Isiliye hamare paas khane tak ke paise nahi the."

Responding to claims that the family owned a large house and therefore couldn't have struggled financially, Sheetal said hardships are not determined by the size of someone's home. She clarified that Shivangi never meant the family became homeless when she said they had "come out on the streets." In her words:

"Problem ghar aur time dekh ke nahi aati hain...Humare paas ghar tha. Woh ghar humein kama ke nahi de raha tha kuch bhi."

Sheetal also spoke about how painful it was for the family to see Shivangi's emotional revelation dismissed online. She added that the house people now describe as a bungalow looks the way it does because of Shivangi's success. Sheetal said:

"Jab Shivangi ne woh secret reveal kiya tha na, hum log literally roye the. Hum hain us story ka part...Agar aaj hum us ghar ko bangla bolte hain toh woh Shivangi ki wajah se hai... Main aap logon se literally request karti hoon, please meri behen ko jhootha mat boliye. Woh jhooth nahi bol rahi hai."

Shivangi's team addresses the 'fake story' allegations

Amid the growing controversy, Shivangi's team also released a statement clarifying why there is no contradiction between her recent confession and her previous interviews. The statement explained that Shivangi's father first served in the Indian Army before opting for voluntary retirement and later starting a business. The statement read:

"Rest assured, Shivangi remembers exactly what she's said in her interviews. What seems to have slipped past you is simpler: a person is allowed more than one chapter. Her father served, took voluntary retirement, then went into business. Army first, business later. Both true. That's not a lie. That's just a life you only knew half of."

Despite the online backlash, Shivangi has secured a place in the finale week of Lock Upp: Sach Ya Saza.
