It was in 1993 when Shilpa Shetty had made her debut in Bollywood with Baazigar, and 7 years later, in 2000, her sister, Shamita Shetty had entered into the industry with Mohabbatein. But do you know that Shilpa was insecure from her sister, Shamita when she had made her debut in 2000? In an interview with Pinkvilla on their show, No More Secrets, Shilpa and Shamita spoke about their bond and the insecurities.
Beginning with the bond that they had shared since childhood and recalling a story when she had locked Shamita Shetty inside their father’s cupboard, Shilpa Shetty Kundra reminisced, "We used to fight a lot when we were kids. There was a time I have locked Shamita inside daddy's cupboard. Then, when she came out, she was mata chandalini (laughs). Then we have had huge fights. She and I have fought, I have thrown a sun mica piece at her and there's a cut on her face." Shamita continued, "Imagine, she's given me a permanent cut and people think I've a temper."
Admitting that she was insecure of her sister, Shamita Shetty when she had debuted in Bollywood with Mohabbatein, Shilpa Shetty Kundra confessed, "I always felt she's the better looking sister, the fairer one. She's a better actress and a dancer. So I'll admit this for the first time on this show that when she debuted, I did feel that nobody would give me work anymore after that." Speaking of her struggle, Shamita had stated, "In school, I was this girl who was athletic and good at sports. When I entered the film industry, it was suddenly different. It was a struggle to find my own identity. I knew about comparisons but the media was really harsh on me." On February 2, 2020, when Shamita Shetty had turned a year older, Shilpa Shetty Kundra had posted a throwback video of dancing with the birthday girl on the song, Pehla Nasha. Till then your Dance partner (in crime always) Love you my darling .. more than you would evvverr know! #birthday #birthdaygirl #celebrations #sisters #soulmate #love #gratitude.”
In a throwback interview with the Bombay Times, Shamita Shetty had addressed the constant comparisons with her sister, Shilpa Shetty Kundra. Shamita was quoted as saying, “Even today, many people identify me as Shilpa’s sister, but I have made peace with it. Sometimes, they even call me Shilpa, because I resemble her a bit. I don’t feel offended because at the end of the day, she is someone I aspire to be. Initially, I didn’t understand the comparisons because we are two different individuals and can’t be expected to achieve the same in life. Now, it doesn’t affect me at all. I’m lucky to be compared to someone who is respected for what she does and for the person she is. I am proud of that. Sometimes, there are comments on social media about how I’m being taken care of by my sister and brother-in-law, and how I have such an easy life. Let me make it clear that I take care of myself.”
Last year in February, Shamita Shetty was trolled by netizens for mistreating a fan. In a post where Shamita had clarified the situation, Shilpa Shetty Kundra had stood by her sister’s side. She had written, “Judgments are a confession of ones own character. @shamitashetty_official do your karma, this is part and parcel of our life… lots of pros a few cons” followed by heart and kiss emojis. And her brother-in-law, Raj Kundra had written, “Don’t explain and don’t complain best philosophy haters will hate, that’s their job! Keep rocking” followed by kiss emojis.
