After so many years of dealing with her first marriage failing, Shefali talked about the same in her memoir-in-essays, The Audacity of Being. Now, Shefali revealed that she had talked about the matter in the most respectful way.
Shefali Shah talked about her first marriage in her memoir
Recently, in an interview with The Indian Express, Shefali revealed that she has not named anyone in the book. She is not even talking about what happened between them or what didn't happen. She revealed she had talked about it in general and said:
"I’m not naming anyone in the book. I’m not even getting into what happened or didn’t happen. I’m just talking about what happens on a general scale when people get married, and nobody’s prepared for a divorce."
Shefali stated that she has written about it in a very respectful way. She revealed that people often enter marriage with the idea of a happily-ever-after, and how difficult life gets when things do not work out. She said:
"There was nothing to really hide about it. I think I’ve written about it very respectfully. I’m just talking about any marriage falling off the brink. There’s an entire thing about when you realise your marriage is falling apart. So it’s, I think, about the failure of a relationship."
For the unversed, Shefali was once married to the famous actor Harsh Chhaya. The couple got married in 1997 and parted ways in 2001. Over the years, Shefali made sure to keep details of it private and rarely talked about their marriage or divorce.
It was during the shooting of her film, Satya, that Shefali fell head over heels in love with Harsh. The two dated for a brief period and decided to get married in 1997. After four years of living together, the two ended up in a bitter divorce. Back in those days, the two admitted that the divorce was a bitter one and they had seen the ugly side of each other.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Shefali shared her side of the story. She admitted to giving a long chunk of her life to her first marriage. She stated that she believed marriages were all about happily-ever-after. However, she quickly realised that it was not necessary for it to work out. After a period of constantly difficult days, she decided what was best. She admitted that she gave the relationship a lot of time, and it was bad that it didn't work out. She was quoted as saying:
"I have given a long, long chunk of life to that relationship. I worked very hard, and I used to believe that marriages are happily ever after until you realise, okay, it’s a notion. That’s not necessarily true in life. It was not that whole phase that wasn't making me richer or happier, or a better person. And after a point in time, you just realise what is better for you, which is better for everyone around."
