The duo’s relationship has once again come into focus after Shakira delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, with Gerard present in the stands.
Did Gerard Piqué cheat on Shakira with Clara Chia Marti?
At the time of Shakira and Gerard’s split, many believed that the singer had found evidence of her husband cheating on her owing to a missing jam jar. She reportedly became suspicious once she realized that some of the strawberry jam that she had kept in the fridge was getting eaten by someone.
However, neither Gerard nor their kids, Milan and Sasha, were particularly fond of that flavour of jam. This led her to believe that someone apart from her family members had entered her house and eaten the jam.
Shakira also alluded to the way she discovered Gerard’s cheating in a music video. Notably, in the accompanying visuals of her and Rauw Alejandro’s single, Te Felucito. As soon as she opens a refrigerator, she can be seen discovering Rauw’s head on a platter.
After the jam rumours went viral, Shakira later dispelled them when she released the track BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53 with Argentine producer Bizarrap in January 2023. Incidentally, this was the same month that Gerard debuted his romance with Clara Chia Marti on Instagram. Shakira can be heard singing:
"I won't get back with you, not if you cry, not even if you beg me. It's clear that it's not my fault if they criticise you. I just make music, sorry if it splashes you."
However, this did not dismiss Gerard’s cheating rumours as Shakira made sure to slip in a reference to Clara, with whom the footballer allegedly cheated, in the same song. Many fans noticed that Shakira intentionally emphasized ‘clara’ in the word ‘claramente’ while singing.
To make matters worse, they also noticed that Clara had been featured in a Zoom interview that Gerard did from home back in 2021. According to reports, when Shakira found out, she was "devastated to learn that this woman clearly felt at home in the house that they shared with their children." The Zoom call reportedly happened when the Hips Don't Lie singer was away travelling with their children. A source revealed at the time:
“They were very much still together at that time. It's devastating for her to learn that this affair had been going on for a lot longer than she imagined.”
Shakira opened up about heartbreak after Gerard Piqué’s alleged cheating
For those unaware, Shakira and Gerard Piqué separated in 2022 after almost 11 years together. The duo, who were once considered a power couple in the sports and entertainment world, shared the news of their split in a joint statement. The statement can be read as:
“We regret to confirm that we are separating. We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority.”
In an interview after their split, Shakira shared that her 2023 single, BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53, had helped her cope with the breakup. She said, “It was just pure catharsis. I really needed to write about what I was going through and not having any censor.”
She also noted that trying to move on from her had made her realise how resilient she was. And even though “life is a bitch,” it is worth living because of her friends.
