Shabana Azmi is one of the supremely talented legends of Indian cinema. The actress, who has marked some of the most glorious decades on the celluloid needs no introduction, when it comes to her phenomenal acting chops. She recently wowed the audience with two of her exemplary performances in the films, Ghoomer and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. In her personal life, she is married to renowned lyricist, Javed Akhtar. For the unversed, Javed was previously married to actress, Honey Irani and the duo are parents to their children, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar.
In a recent interaction with Zoom, Shabana Azmi talked about the kind of equation she shares with her step-children, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. The veteran star credited their mother, Honey Irani for her generosity so as to be able to share her children with the actress. Shabana mentioned how Honey Irani, right from her children’s childhood, made them realise that the former wasn’t anyway close to like the wicked stepmother in fairytales. Shabana said:
“It is because of Honey’s generosity! It could’ve not been possible if Honey would not have been so generous to share them [with me]. She did that from the time they (Zoya and Farhan) were children. When they got that from their mother and released that I wasn’t the ‘stepmother’ they had read about in fairy tales, it became so much easier.”

Speaking along the same lines, Shabana Azmi mentioned how from the very first day, she never attempted to make Zoya and Farhan feel pressurised to accept her in their lives. Adding the need to keep everything simple and organic, Shabana added how she let everything fall into place in its own due course, due to which they share a nice and warm bonding with her now. Adding how they fall under one big family, Shabana expressed:
“I didn’t push myself on them and didn’t too hard. I just let it be. I let the water flow its course. It is a really beautiful relationship. I would give a lot of credit to Honey for that but also to myself, Javed and the children. Today, when you see us, we are like a family. She (Honey) is a family member.”
Moving forth with the conversation, Shabana Azmi then opened up about her husband, Javed Akhtar’s divorce from his ex-wife, Honey Irani. The veteran star reflected how the word ‘divorce’ is merely something written on a piece of paper, that can never undo the feelings which have existed between a husband and wife. Moreover, she also reflected on how certain couples are quite hasty when it comes to the matter of divorce, and added how one should never judge anyone going through that stage since it is a very painful chapter.

In the concluding segment of the interview, Shabana Azmi walked down the memory lane and spoke about the tumultuous time she had to endure back in the days, after she decided to get married to Javed Akhtar. Shabana, who always had a feminist sense of opinion, recalled people calling her out for the same. However, the diva mentioned she chose to keep her dignified silence all over the matter. In her words:
“Both Javed saab and I are feminists so my fans were startled because they saw it as a blow to the feminism they had associated me with. But at that time, I had two choices — either duck and say nothing or explain myself which would’ve hurt too many people around me. So staying silent was the sensible thing to do because obviously when people were saying, How could you let us down? You’re a feminist! How could you do this to another woman! the desire to explain myself was very strong but the fact that I didn’t, help the healing.”
