Sean Grayson has died in prison while serving a 20-year sentence. The former Illinois sheriff's deputy was in prison for the 2024 killing of Sonya Massey. Grayson's attorney announced his death on Sunday, August 23, 2026. Amid his death, his personal life has also come into focus, so let's take a look at who his fiancee, Isabel Butterfield, is.

Who was Sean Grayson's fiancee, Isabel Butterfield?

According to reports, Sean Grayson was engaged to the daughter of former Sangamon County chief deputy Scott Butterfield at the time of the incident. A report by WCIA even alleged that Sean was hired for the job on Scott's referral. While not much is known about his daughter, her name allegedly is Isabel Butterfield, and she even wrote a letter as a character witness for Sean during the murder trial.

She penned a letter to the Judge overseeing the case, stating that she had known Sean Grayson for five years and referring to him as her "fiancé". Isabel Butterfield called him "kind, respectful, and supportive" while alleging that he had faced several difficulties, including the loss of his brother and his own battle with cancer. Despite mentioning how long they had been together, Isabel didn't share much about her relationship with Sean, keeping the focus on her plea for her then-fiancé.

While many have alleged that Isabel Butterfield is a nurse practitioner in Springfield and tried to connect Sonya Massey's murder to her, there hasn't been any confirmation of the same. A report by US News Health confirmed that she does work as a nurse practitioner; there was no confirmation or reliable source that could confirm that she worked at the same hospital where Sonya was being treated for her mental illness.

It is also to be noted that whether Isabel Butterfield and Sean Grayson were still engaged cannot be confirmed. However, given that her mother, Susan Butterfield, had also written a letter to Judge Cadigan dated January 20, 2026, citing Sean as her "daughter's fiancé," it suggests that they were still together. Susan also wrote to the court as a character witness for Sean for sentencing consideration. These letters were also shared by WCIA.

An "official" photo from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office dated in December of 2020 shows Isabel Butterfield posing with her father, now retired Sangamon County chief deputy Scott Butterfield. The two other women in the photo appear to be his wife and other daughter as they all celebrate his retirement. Multiple reports indicate that the deputy chief was instrumental in the hiring of killer-cop Sean Grayson into the Sangamon County sheriff's department.

More about Sean Grayson's death and Sonya Massey's murder case

Sean Grayson passed away on August 23, 2026. However, no cause of death has been released so far. The former policeman had stage 4 colon cancer and had recently sought medical release from prison because of his condition. The Illinois Prisoner Review Board rejected that request in July 2026. For those who are not aware, he was convicted of second-degree murder in October 2025 and sentenced to 20 years in prison in January 2026. He was 32 years old at the time of his death.

Talking about Sonya Massey's murder case, the victim was a 36-year-old Black woman who was fatally shot in her home by then Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy on July 6, 2024, after she called emergency services to report a potential prowler. Sean and Deputy Dawson Farley found nothing outside. Inside, over a pot of boiling water, Massey said, "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus," which led Sean to raise his gun and fire three times. One shot hit Sonya below the eye, ultimately claiming her life.
