In an interview with News18.com, Sarika talked about taking a break from work for one year and how it got extended for five years. Talking about her sabbatical, Sarika said:
"I just thought I was wasting life in a way if you look at it. You wake up every morning, (things) don’t happen, you go to sleep. So I just decided to take one year’s break and not do any work. Go away and do something totally different."
Sarika further revealed that she had started doing theatre and enjoyed the experience and shared how the one-year break had turned into five. The actress further revealed that during the COVID-19 pandemic, she ran out of money as she was making less than Rs. 3000 while working in theatre. Talking about the same, Sarika shared:
"Lockdown happened and the money ran out, so where do you go? You go back to acting because in theatre you just get like Rs. 2000-2700 and you can’t do anything so this is why I was not at all there. It was a very conscious decision but I thought it would be for a year but it turned out to be five years. Those were great five years."
Sarika had given up acting at the peak of her career when she had got married to superstar, Kamal Haasan and had moved to Chennai. It was in the mid-2000 when she had returned to acting with films like Bheja Fry, Manorama Six Feet Under, Parzania and many more.
