Samuel Monroe Jr. remains in critical condition at a Los Angeles hospital, where he’s been on life support for months. His relatives recently told TMZ that things are looking increasingly bleak. Monroe was first admitted in April 2026 after a severe meningitis infection. That illness led to MRSA pneumonia, also called Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and since then his health has declined through a cascade of further problems.
Meanwhile, Samuel Monroe Jr.’s wife, Shawna Stewart, has also shared an update, saying that the pressure in his brain has been rising because the ventricles have grown and can’t drain fluid properly. The issue has triggered seizures, and he’s already had three separate brain operations. She also noted that one of his lungs has partially given out.
Medical staff is continuing to run CT scans to track what’s happening in his brain. However, doctors have cautioned that he could be left in a vegetative state. The family says they’re grappling with an agonizing choice about next steps.
Early reports opened up on how Monroe’s body has been overwhelmed and that he went through multiple transfusions in a short span. Apart from that, Samuel was put on dialysis as the infections took hold.
Meanwhile, Shawna Stewart added that the family has decided to authorize three or four final scans. Once those results come in, they are expected to make what she called a heartbreaking call about his care.
Samuel Monroe Jr.’s health issues started a long time ago
Back in April 2026, it was confirmed that Samuel Monroe Jr. was on life support following a meningitis diagnosis. Speaking to Fox News Digital at that time, his wife, Shawna Stewart, said that roughly 18 months ago, Samuel picked up the infection while working in Las Vegas. She added that for about nine months now, the family has been doing everything possible to keep him alive.
According to Stewart, Monroe was taken to several hospitals and was misdiagnosed multiple times. She stated that due to that delay, the meningitis went untreated for eight months. By the time doctors identified it correctly, she noted, the infection had already reached his brain and spine. The family confirmed he is currently dependent on life support.
Stewart later shared that a CT scan indicated that Samuel Monroe Jr. was dealing with encephalopathy. She explained that his brain tissue has been breaking down after a string of serious medical setbacks. Stewart also mentioned that she holds power of attorney and is weighing decisions around his quality of life, though no final choice has been made yet. She mentioned that his immune system is extremely compromised, which is why he’s being cared for in a negative pressure room.
Shawna Stewart said that Samuel is on six different antibiotics as medical teams work to manage the infections and related complications, keeping him in critical condition. Stewart said that Monroe has opened his eyes on a few occasions recently, but she suspects those movements were likely reflex responses to pain during handling rather than conscious action.
Samuel Monroe Jr.’s family also launched a GoFundMe page, with the description saying that it aimed to help cover treatment costs and support Monroe’s two children, Kingston, 12, and Brooklynn, 11.
