The man is one of the most prominent figures in Indian history, as he didn't just invent something new, but also changed the way a nation thinks. Naidu's story began long before startups, innovation and homegrown technology became a 'concept' in India.
The self-taught inventor from Coimbatore paved his path in times when being an innovator was not an easy task. However, Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu believed the country could build its own machines instead of depending on imported ones. While his journey is beautifully covered in GDN, there's a part of his life that remains hidden. So, let's take a quick look at the family behind GD Naidu.
Meet GD Naidu's lesser-known wife, Ranganayakimma
Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu designed electric motors, experimented with automobiles, revolutionised public transport, cultivated new crop varieties and even imagined technologies that were far ahead of their time. However, despite his extraordinary contributions, his name rarely finds a place alongside India's most celebrated innovators.
While R Madhavan's GDN attempts to change that, there was someone who stood by him through every successful and unsuccessful mission. Yes, we are talking about Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu's wife. GD Naidu was married to a woman named Ranganayakimmal, also known as Ranganayaki, according to StarSunFolded. Reports have revealed that he got married at a young age. However, not much is known about his wife in the archives from his early life, except from the sparse documentation.
Nonetheless, it is believed that Ranganayakimmal was with Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu through all the ups and downs of his life. The role of Ranganayakimmal is played by Dushara Vijayan in GDN. Apart from his wife, the film also features Priyamani as Chellamma, a central figure in Naidu's life and his alleged first love.
Meet Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu and Ranganayakimmal's children
Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu and Ranganaykimmal welcomed a son named GD Gopal, and just like his father, he also grew up to become one of the most well-known names in the world of invocation. He was an industrialist and philanthropist who carried forward his father's legacy in Coimbatore. He was inducted into the FIVA Heritage Hall of Fame Awards in October 2025 for his contributions. Naidu also has two grandchildren named G.D. Rajkumar and Shantini.
While busy with innovation, Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu didn't get a chance to give much time to his family. However, for the country, he turned out to be one of the greatest gems. Nonetheless, while we celebrate him today, we can't forget the sacrifices his family made for the future of the country to shine. Naidu died on January, 4 1974. Sir C V Raman paid his tribute to Naidu following his death and said:
"A great educator, an entrepreneur in many fields of engineering and industry, a warm-hearted man filled with love for his fellows and a desire to help them in their troubles, Mr Naidu is truly a man in a million – perhaps this is an understatement!"
