Sam Neill’s death has shocked his huge fanbase, and condolences have been pouring in ever since; one of them came from English actor Richard E. Grant. One of Neill's closest friends, Grant, paid tribute to his old friend on social media with a heart-melting post. Sharing photographs of the pair, Grant penned that he had known Neill for three decades. He further mentioned how Neill guided and helped him through a very difficult time in his life.
For the unversed, Richard Grant lost his wife, Joan Washington, to cancer in 2021, and it was Neill who remained a source of comfort for Grant. He supported Grant to sail through the difficult time while battling his own blood cancer. A source close to Neill revealed:
“Sam never wanted recognition for the support he gave Richard after Joan died. He believed friendship meant showing up when someone needed you most. That quiet loyalty became one of the last great acts of kindness of his life.”
The source further mentioned that despite his own health struggles, Neill didn’t think twice about standing as a pillar of strength for his friend. Neill didn’t do it for publicity but considered it as his duty to be there for his friend. The source could be quoted as saying:
“Even while facing his own health challenges, Sam found time to lift other people. Helping Richard through grief was something he considered a privilege rather than a burden, and it summed up the man he was."

It was on July 13, 2026, that the news of Sam Neill’s sudden death made the headlines. His sudden death at 78 came as a shock for his loved ones. The actor died peacefully in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by loved ones. He had been battling stage three blood cancer since 2022, and in April 2026, the actor declared himself cancer-free. However, within two months of his declaration, Neill breathed his last.
His family released an official statement regarding the actor’s death and also revealed that more details about the same will be revealed later, as the family is navigating the difficult time. It was in 2023 that the veteran actor first revealed that he was being treated for stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.
He revealed taking a new chemotherapy drug monthly to keep the cancer at bay. Neill later announced that he is cancer-free after undergoing a new treatment when chemotherapy stopped working on his stage-three blood cancer. He also spoke about the immunotherapy which he underwent as part of a clinical trial – to be rolled out for blood cancer patients across Australia.
