Peaky Blinders actor, Sam Neill maintained a very private personal life. He kept his public persona focused on his career as an actor and didn't reveal much about his family. Beyond the glitz and glam of Hollywood, Sam tried his luck in romance multiple times. He was married twice; however, both ended in heartbreak. After the actor's high-profile partnership with actress Lisa Harrow ended, he moved on to a low-key relationship. Shortly after his first divorce in 1989, he found love in a Japanese non-celebrity named Noriko Watanabe.
Sam crossed paths with Noriko on the set of his 1989 film Dead Calm, where she was working as a makeup artist. Sam, who was fresh out of a heartbreak, was immediately smitten by Noriko and actively pursued her during the filming of the movie. He told The Guardian they were on an island for the shoot and there was a lot of leisure time, which he spent chasing Noriko. He revealed that she turned down his approaches multiple times but eventually gave in to his persistence. Sam Neill stated:
"We met on Dead Calm. It was on an island with plenty of time on our hands, so I leapt out in pursuit of her. I met with tremendous resistance for a long time. I got there in the end with dogged persistence."
After winning Noriko Watanabe over and dating for four years, starting September 1989, Sam Neill exchanged vows for the second time in 1993. Two years before their official marriage, they became parents to a daughter named Elena. Just like Sam, Elena was reportedly an actor who starred in some projects, including Top of the Lake (2013) and The Brush-off (2004), according to her IMDb profile. But in 2023, Sam revealed to The Sydney Morning Herald that Elena was a tattoo artist based in Melbourne, Australia.
Sam also adopted Maiko, Noriko's daughter from an earlier marriage, and together they had a sweet blended family of four. However, not all good things last, and Sam and Noriko’s marriage was no exception. The couple quietly separated in 2017 after about 28 years of togetherness.
Sam Neill triumphed over a serious ailment in his final months of life
In April 2026, veteran star Sam Neill shared that he was ailment-free after battling stage-three blood cancer. However, within just three months, his family released an official statement regarding the actor's "sudden and unexpected" death. They mentioned that the actor breathed his last in the presence of his loved ones and passed away with dignity. The statement can be read as:
"It is with immense sadness that the whanau [extended family] of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free."
The statement also mentioned that Sam was cancer-free in his final months. The actor first revealed that he was being treated for stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma in 2023. He revealed taking a new chemotherapy drug monthly to keep the cancer at bay. After about three years of battle against the serious ailment, Sam Neill was finally cured. However, his demise shortly after the revelation of the happy news broke the hearts of his family, fans and close people.
