Ronn Owens Warned About Daughter Laura Owens Years Before Pregnancy Scandal, Witness Recalls Warning

Years before Laura became embroiled in the widely publicized paternity scandal involving former Bachelor star Clayton Echard, a witness claimed that Ronn privately warned someone close to his daughter that she had “a tendency to exaggerate or even flat out make things up.”
The alleged remark appeared in a sworn court declaration connected to Laura’s long-running legal dispute with her former boyfriend, Michael Marraccini. But Ronn has firmly denied ever making such a statement. As Laura pled guilty in court, Ronn's alleged warning has resurfaced.
The witness' alleged 2016 account of Ronn Owens' warning about his daughter
According to the sworn declaration filed in San Francisco County Superior Court, the alleged conversation took place during a December 2016 meeting involving Laura, Marraccini, Ronn and another witness. At the time, Marraccini had reportedly started questioning several of Laura’s claims, including allegations that she was pregnant. Their relationship had become increasingly difficult, while concerns were also raised about Laura’s emotional wellbeing.
The witness, described as Marraccini’s future brother-in-law, claimed that Ronn encouraged Marraccini to continue supporting Laura until she was in a better emotional state. Ronn allegedly promised to help Marraccini eventually "get out of" the relationship and reportedly warned that Laura had a tendency to exaggerate or make things up.
Meanwhile, Marraccini's relationship with Laura had already raised similar questions years before the Echard scandal became public. The pair met through a dating app in 2016, and Marraccini later claimed their relationship became increasingly complicated after Laura told him she was pregnant. Court records also detailed later claims involving pregnancy complications, abortion-related medical issues and ovarian cancer. Years afterward, while testifying in the Clayton Echard paternity case, Laura denied ever being diagnosed with cancer.
Marraccini has consistently denied Laura’s separate allegations that he physically abused her. Their conflict resulted in a domestic violence restraining order and years of continuing legal disputes, during which the witness declaration describing Ronn's alleged comments resurfaced.
Ronn Owens denies ever calling Laura an 'exaggerator'
Ronn Owens and his wife, former reporter Jan Black, have strongly disputed the witness' account. In a June 2026 statement addressing the allegation, Ronn insisted he had never told anyone that his daughter exaggerated or fabricated stories. He also questioned the witness’ credibility and disputed the account of what happened during the 2016 meeting. He said:
"I have never said my daughter ‘makes things up,’ ‘exaggerates,’ or anything remotely similar — not once, not to a friend, not to a family member, and certainly not to [the witness], whom I’ve met only a handful of times."
Despite the legal troubles and intense public scrutiny surrounding Laura, both Ronn and Jan have continued to publicly support their daughter. They have repeatedly maintained that they believe Laura was genuinely pregnant in the cases involving Marraccini, Gillespie and Echard. The couple has also rejected accusations that their continued support amounts to enabling her behavior. The radio legend noted in his May 2026 statement that their support for Laura "is rooted in firsthand knowledge of what she has endured emotionally, medically, legally, and psychologically over many years."
Ronn has previously argued that standing beside his daughter should not be viewed as a stain on his decades-long broadcasting legacy. Instead, he has described his position as one rooted in loyalty and compassion. He wrote, "If anything, it reflects loyalty, compassion and a refusal to sacrifice my child to satisfy an online mob."
For now, the alleged 2016 warning remains a fiercely disputed claim contained in a sworn witness declaration. The witness says he heard Ronn Owens warn about Laura’s alleged tendency to exaggerate, while Ronn unequivocally says the conversation never happened that way and that he never made those remarks.
Ronn's alleged statement has now attracted significant attention because of what happened years later. Laura became nationally known after filing a paternity case against reality TV star Clayton Echard in 2023, claiming she was pregnant with twins and seeking child support. The former Bachelor star challenged the allegations, and the case eventually became one of the most talked-about controversies in Bachelor Nation.
The dispute later led to a judge referring the matter for criminal investigation. Arizona authorities also pursued allegations involving another man, Greg Gillespie, over separate disputed pregnancy claims. Laura subsequently faced criminal charges involving allegations of fraud, perjury and related offenses. On August 28, 2026, she entered a plea agreement involving charges including "fraudulent schemes and artifices," "taking the identity of another," and "perjury."
