Owens has now admitted to the scandal, pleading guilty to two counts of fraudulent schemes and artifices. The development has brought renewed attention not only to what happened between Owens and Echard, but also to the other men whose experiences have become part of her wider story of pregnancy frauds.
How did the Clayton Echard paternity scandal begin?
The controversy began in 2023 when Laura Owens filed a paternity lawsuit against Clayton Echard, claiming she was pregnant with twins and that he was the father. Echard, who became known to Bachelor Nation through The Bachelorette before leading Season 26 of The Bachelor, strongly disputed the claims. The case quickly became one of Bachelor Nation's wildest legal controversies.
In May 2023, Owens and Echard met in Phoenix, Arizona, during a real estate-related interaction, where they allegedly had an "intimate encounter," as per court records. In early June, Owens showed Echard positive pregnancy tests and medical records, claiming she was pregnant with his twins. In August 2023, Owens filed a paternity petition in Maricopa County family court, but Echard denied the paternal claim and requested DNA testing.
The paternity results came in late September 2023, and they reportedly showed “little to no fetal DNA.” Owens submitted yet another sample in December, which also yielded the same result. Throughout this time, she attended remote hearings and claimed she was due on February 14, 2024, while appearing visibly pregnant on the video. Later, on December 28, 2024, she dropped the paternity claim, saying she had suffered a miscarriage.
However, the case took a dramatic turn after investigations and court proceedings raised serious questions about the evidence presented. Investigators alleged that documents had been falsified and that a pregnancy video and ultrasound image had been fabricated or altered. Owens was also accused of making false statements under oath. A family court judge ultimately ruled that the paternity claims against Echard were false and referred the matter to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
The false claims weighed heavily on Echard's career, and he spent years publicly fighting to clear his name. After Owens was indicted in 2025 on 14 felony charges in Arizona, he described the development as a major relief following what he called a lengthy and exhausting ordeal. In an Instagram video, the reality TV star said:
"Justice is finally served!... I have not been this happiest as a weight of two years lifted off my shoulders, of these guys before me, years lifted off their shoulders. It feels good."
The latest development marks one of the biggest moments in the case so far. On August 28, 2026, Owens pled guilty to four charges: two counts of fraudulent schemes and artifices, one count involving taking the identity of another person, and one count of perjury. The agreement also resolves a separate criminal case connected to allegations involving another alleged victim.
Who were Laura Owens' other alleged victims?
While Clayton Echard's case received the most national attention because of his Bachelor fame, public reporting and legal proceedings have connected Owens to several other men.
One of the earlier reported cases involved a man identified publicly as Matt. According to accounts surrounding the timeline, Owens allegedly claimed she was pregnant following the end of their relationship and filed a lawsuit. The matter was later dropped. Another widely discussed case involved Mike Marraccini, who has previously spoken publicly about his experience. Their relationship reportedly became increasingly complicated after Owens allegedly made claims involving pregnancy and serious health issues.
There was also another former partner, identified in some accounts as Andrew, whose experience has received less public attention. Details about that relationship have largely remained private out of respect for his wishes. The other major case involved Gregory Gillespie. According to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, Owens began dating the victim in 2021, but the relationship ended after only a few dates. Investigators alleged that Owens subsequently claimed she was pregnant by him and falsified documents to support the claim.
In November 2025, Owens was indicted on additional felony charges connected to that case, including allegations of perjury, fraudulent schemes, identity theft, forgery and theft by extortion.
Laura Owens' sentencing is scheduled for October 23, 2026, in Maricopa County Superior Court.
