Inside 'Bait' Star, Riz Ahmed And Fatima Farheen Mirza's Relationship, Met At A Cafe, Wed In Secret

Riz Ahmed is a renowned British actor and rapper. His acting career began in the 2000s after he graduated from the Royal School of Speech and Drama. At the time, he starred in several independent films, including Guantanamo (2006), Shifty (2008), Four Lions (2010), and Trishna (2011). Riz's breakout role came a few years later when he starred in the 2014 film, Nightcrawler.   

Some of the most notable projects Riz has appeared in since then are Jason Bourne, Rogue One, The Night Of, Mogul Mowgli, and more. At present, Riz is hogging the spotlight for his role in the new 6-part comedy on Prime Video, Bait. For the unversed, the show released on March 25, 2026 and has already become a favourite among comedy lovers. Amid this, fans have become curious about Riz Ahmed's relationship with his wife, Fatima Farheen Mirza.  

Riz Ahmed and Fatima Farheen Mirza first met at a cafe in New York City  

Riz Ahmed and Fatima Farheen Mirza's first meeting is nothing short of a real-life meet-cute. According to reports, the duo met each other for the first time “randomly” while visiting a cafe in New York City in 2018. Riz, during an appearance on The Tonight Show in January 2021, gave fans more insight about the same, saying that he and his now-wife sat down at the same table in a cafe where they had both turned up to write. He added that they were “both jostling over the same laptop plug points, like a very modern way of meeting.  

It is worth noting that at the time, Riz was preparing for his role in Sound of Metal. This film would later earn him his first Oscar nomination. Riz noted that preparing for that role was really “special” and that it “brought a lot of goodness” into his life. Riz went on to say that after his first meeting with Fatima, they “struck up a friendship” and later “reconnected down the line.”

While we do not know exactly when Farheen popped the big question to Fatima, we do know it was sometime during the COVID-19 lockdown period. Calling the proposal “corny,” Riz revealed details from the time during an April 2021 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Apparently, Riz's choice of place to propose was their local park, where he and Fatima had a picnic before he made his move. It was while they were playing Scrabble, which Riz noted Fatima loves, that he stole all the correct letters up and worked out, “Will you marry me?”

Just like their engagement, the exact date of their marriage is not known, but Riz and Fatima supposedly tied the knot sometime in late 2020. According to reports, it was a “super intimate” backyard ceremony in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. Apparently, this was the same place where Fatima grew up, and her family still lives to date. One of the main reasons Riz and Fatima were able to keep their marriage a secret for a good amount of time was that it took place amid the ongoing pandemic. This also resulted in “hardly anyone there” being there during their marriage.

During an episode of Grounded with Louis Theroux, released on January 11, 2021, Riz Ahmed accidentally let slip that he was married. Reportedly, he made the slip-up when he was asked where he stayed during the lockdown. When asked, Riz said he stayed in California because that's where his “wife's family” lived. After realising that he had mistakenly revealed that he was married, Riz jokingly said, “I think this is the first time I've ever mentioned it in an interview, so congratulations on this incredibly exciting scoop.”  

Riz Ahmed and Fatima Farheen Mirza made their red carpet debut as a couple at the Oscars 

A couple of months after Riz slipped up and announced his marriage to the whole world, he and his wife, Fatima Farheen Mirza, made their official red carpet debut as a couple. This was at the 93rd Annual Academy Awards, a.k.a. the 2021 Oscars, where Riz was nominated in the Best Actor category. During the event, while walking on the red carpet and posing for photos, the duo shared the most adorable moment when Riz paused to fix his wife, Fatima's, hair. At the time, Riz joked, “I'm the official groomer.”

Another notable red carpet event that Riz Ahmed and Fatima hit together was for the UK premiere of the actor's sci-fi thriller, Encounter. The premiere was held at the 2021 BFI London Film Festival on October 8, 2021. Among all their other red carpet appearances, this was one of the most special ones as it marked the first time the couple was seen together in Riz's hometown.

On March 29, 2022, Riz won his first Oscar for The Long Goodbye at the Academy Awards that year. For the unversed, The Long Goodbye is a short film which accompanied Riz's concept album of the same name. Following his monumental win, Riz went on to give a sweet shout-out to his wife. He wrote, “Thank you to my family and to my wife @ffmirza for being my torch in the darkness.” A couple of days after his win, Fatima gave a tribute to her husband in a rare post on Instagram. In the long note she wrote:  

"I don't know anyone who works as hard as Rizwan. I'm always stunned by how his every creative choice is grounded in his values, his truth, and his heart. The Long Goodbye is a bold depiction of so many of our fears, and seeing it on screen, despite how terrifying it is, is also somehow an affirming comfort. So proud of this win and how it expands what's possible for the rest of us."
