Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleHomi Adajania’s 2012 romantic drama Cocktail has been one of the most loved Bollywood movies of all time, which featured Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty in the lead roles. The movie is considered to be an iconic one, and for the same reason, when the sequel to the movie was announced, people were left excited.
Cocktail 2 was released on June 19, 2026, and has been receiving mixed reactions from the audience. Cocktail 2 features Rashmika Mandanna, Kriti Sanon and Shahid Kapoor in the lead roles. Well, as Cocktail 2 is in the talks, people are also looking back at the 2012 movie. Did you know that Deepika's ex, Ranbir Kapoor was originally chosen for the lead role, but it was Saif Ali Khan who bagged it. Let's know why Ranbir didn't do the film.
Saif Ali Khan sat for an interview with Variety India, wherein he spoke about the casting process and revealed that the team had already selected Deepika and Diana for the movie, but was yet to find the right actor to play the male lead.
As per Saif, it was because Deepika's role was 'delicious'. Saif Ali Khan said the list featured Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan. The other actors said 'no' to the film, and eventually the offer came to Saif, and he said 'yes' to the same. He jokingly said that everyone should be very grateful because of him, as it's his story, and he had great fun doing the movie. Saif could be quoted as saying:
"They had Deepika and Diana, but they couldn’t get a hero to play the part, probably because Veronica’s (played by Deepika) part is so delicious. I remember some names they asked. I think they had asked Imran Khan and they had asked Ranbir Kapoor. And they had asked a few people, and I said, ‘Okay, cool, I’ll do it.’ And I think they should all be very thankful I did. That’s my story. Yeah, because I had great fun. I love Homi. And we had a good time doing it.”
Deepika Padukone also talked about how Ranbir seemingly didn't think that Cocktail was the right choice for Deepika. During the promotion of Tamasha in a conversation with NDTV, Deepika was asked about Ranbir not doing the film. To this, Deepika said that she was about to do the film and was preparing to go to London for the shooting; however, Ranbir was unsure of the same and thought the movie was not right for the actress. During that time, Deepika was delivering some movies, which were not working well at the box office, and her role as 'Veronica' turned out to be a critical and commercial success. Deepika said:
“At the time I was about to do the film, I was preparing to go to London to shoot for Cocktail, and he (Ranbir) felt that it wasn’t the right film for me."

Speaking about the film, Ranbir mentioned during one interview that he was a big fan of what Deepika did in the film, but he was not a fan of the film. To mention, Cocktail shows the love triangle. It showed Diana's 'Meera' entering the relationship between Deepika (Veronica) and Saif (Gautam). The movie collected Rs. 11 crore at the box office on opening day, and went on to achieve a worldwide gross of over Rs. 122 crore.
