Rahul Roy and his former wife Rajlaxmi Khanvilkar met in 1998 at a party. By then, he was already a known face because of his role in Aashiqui (1990). Rahul was a shy, soft-spoken lad still adjusting to the glamor world, while Rajlaxmi was a supermodel whose confidence and self-assured personality drew him to her. At that time, she was also recovering from the emotional aftermath of her brief, broken first marriage to former model and actor Samir Soni.
Rahul and Rajlaxmi reportedly felt an instant connection and began dating shortly after. Following two years of courtship, the duo officially tied the knot in 2000. Initially, their marriage was filled with happiness, but it soon underwent a major shift when Rajlaxmi decided to relocate to Australia to pursue her business ventures. Rahul moved abroad with her for a while, trying to set up a life there.
However, the transition proved challenging as Rahul struggled to find suitable professional opportunities in Australia. He eventually returned to India to rebuild his career. At that time, he won the inaugural season of Bigg Boss in 2006. As Rahul attempted to find stability in life, he suffered from the heartbreak of divorce and several other issues related to his health, finances, and legal cases.
In November 2020, Rahul Roy suffered a brain stroke while shooting for a film in Kargil, which heavily impacted his ability to walk and speak. By then, he had already parted ways with his ex-wife, Rajlaxmi Khanvilkar, because they couldn't make their long-distance relationship work anymore. They jointly decided to part ways and filed for a mutual divorce in 2014, after 14 years of marriage. Rahul recently appeared for an interview with the Times of India, where he candidly opened up about the same.

Following their split, Rahul voluntarily transferred his core assets to Rajlaxmi's name, which added to his already-existing financial troubles. Regardless, he said he held no grudges against Rajlaxmi and would always consider her family his own. Rahul also noted that since he and Rajlaxmi had no children, parting ways amicably was less complicated.
As for Rahul's current life, he shared that he is working to settle a long-standing Rs. 30 lakh legal dispute involving his brother. His medical expenses and the asset transfer to his former spouse have also strained his finances. He currently earns a living by "getting some work" and attending events, for which he charges Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 4 lakh. Regarding rebuilding his life from scratch, he told TOI:
"I am 60 and trying to set up my empire...The last five years have almost been like a break because I was recuperating. There was no work. If that hadn't happened, I would have done much more. But now, I am getting some work and want to do a lot more. I was happy to be back on the set and face the camera. I am really thankful to the people who are trusting me."
