Jennifer Hegseth had her faux pas moment when she attended the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on Saturday. The third wife of U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was one of the attendees at the prestigious event, but things soon backfired for her when a fashion student called her out for allegedly wearing an ultra-cheap dress from a fast-fashion brand.

The White House Correspondents' Association Dinner was held at the Washington Hilton on April 25, 2026, attended by President Donald Trump, the First Lady, Melania Trump, and thousands of dignitaries from the political, administrative, and media circles. Jennifer (Rauchet) Hegseth accompanied the U.S. Defense Secretary to the dinner, stepping out in a soft pink, one-shoulder gown with satin detailing at the waist.

While she definitely looked the part and exuded elegance with her minimalist makeup and a touch of diamonds, Jennifer's outfit stirred buzz as soon as her photos from the night surfaced on the internet. A fashion student, Ella Devi, took to social media and identified the dress as a Temu piece that costs around USD 20. Devi wrote:

"Pete Hegseth’s wife wore a dress from Temu to the white house correspondents’ dinner (I’m not joking)."

While many started calling out the ex-Fox News host for her sartorial choice that allegedly promoted overconsumption if the theory proved true, others criticised Devi and questioned her fashion expertise. Ella Devi later clarified that it bears a closer match to its Shein version, which retails for around USD 40. Devi, a Parsons student studying photography and English, said in her interview that she often discusses the fashion choices of right-wing women on X.

Devi also addressed criticism from industry professionals who called her a "self-described socialist" and questioned her expertise, noting she has worked in fashion since her early teens, including pitching six times at New York Fashion Week and an internship with LaQuan Smith.

The US Secretary of Defense first met Rauchet during their Fox News days, when they were both married to their respective partners. Hegseth was married to his second wife, Samantha Deering, with whom he shares three children, while Rauchet was married to her then-husband, with whom she also shared three children. The two started dating when Hegseth was still married to Deering, and in August 2017, they became parents to their first child.  The couple wed in 2019 at the Trump National Golf Club.

Today, Jennifer Rauchet and Pete Hegseth are raising a large blended family of seven children. After welcoming her daughter, Gwendolyn, with Hegseth in August 2017, Jennifer Rauchet got more involved with the Defense Secretary's family, eventually becoming a mother to seven children: three children from Rauchet’s previous relationship, three sons from Hegseth’s second marriage to Deering, and their daughter.

Hegseth has been especially grateful for Rauchet's support through some of his most controversial moments over the years. One crucial example was from November 2024, when a woman claimed that the then-Fox News anchor may have drugged and sexually assaulted her at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Monterey. While the Defense Secretary was never charged and later confidentially settled, it was his wife, Jennifer, who publicly defended him, sharing writing on Instagram that critics were targeting their values, not just Hegseth himself.

Anyone familiar with Temu and Shein knows about the numerous allegations and controversies that surround these fast fashion giants. Both brands are openly criticised for promoting overconsumption by feeding into the FOMO culture of social media and mass-producing clothes using the cheapest materials with a high carbon footprint. With the rising demand for sustainability, both Temu and Shein have long been on a blacklist of environmentally conscious consumers.
