Sinners was set in 1932 and followed World War I veterans and twin brothers, 'Elijah Smoke' and 'Elias Stack', who worked for the Chicago outfit for years. Using their mob money, they tried to open a juke joint, a safe haven for black people. The attempt turned violent as a group of vampires asked to be let in and turned some of the patrons into vampires. The movie's one of the greatest attractions was Michael's dual roles as 'Smoke' and 'Stack', and there's no doubt that to make it look authentic, a lot of effort and hard work had to be put in.

Coogler, in an interview, said that while 'Stack's role was something similar to what Jordan in real life was, his portrayal as 'Smoke' also left him in awe, and the same was felt by the audience. Speaking to Variety, the cinematographer Arkawpaw and Coogler said that they had to thoroughly plan which scenes could be done through spilt scene technique, which could be achieved by camera, as the director wanted the story to be held in reality, and which could be part of halo rigs. They said that a lot of pressure was on Jordan as he had to give repeated shots.

Jordan, in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, said that it was challenging, as sometimes he would be talking to a body double, and sometimes there would be no one to talk to, and he had to do the scenes alone, thereby being extremely careful. He also added that several modern techniques were used such as halo cameras, facial recognition, a multi-camera rig, but those left a small mergin of error for him and other actors.
