Obsession has started creating records at the box office ever since it arrived in theatres on May 15, 2026. Directed by Curry Barker, the film is getting recognition for its unique premise and tense atmosphere that it has maintained from the beginning until the end. Moreover, the crisp runtime and fast pacing without any unnecessary sequences have also helped it to attract audiences on a large scale.
While Obsession has become a topic of discussion for various reasons, keep reading to know the current position of the film at the box office!

As per the latest update, Obsession has managed to accumulate USD 148 million worldwide at the box office. It is also the first time that a movie from Focus Features has done so well in the U.S. It is collecting USD 40 million at Universal territories and non-Universal markets at the same time. On the stateside, it has maintained a good hold on the third weekend with USD 26.4 million.

The current estimates have hinted that Obsession is slowly approaching the mark of USD 250 million. This means that the movie is going to recover 300 times more of its budget, which is reportedly around USD 750,000. A few other reports have stated that even The Mandalorian And Grogu is falling behind Obsession.

Focus Features is one of the distributors of Obsession along with Universal Pictures. Focus used a different strategy this time by not choosing the platform release. It refers to a process used for indies or original IP to build some buzz. Focus directly brought the film to 2,000 theatres nationwide. Head of distribution for Focus, Lisa Bunnell, described it as a “commercial play,” where a movie is doing better than the expectations without depending on premium formats.

Focus also used another promotional activity by creating a commercial to purchase One Wish Willow. The product was sold out in a brief period. Focus Features then put up cryptic billboards in various places, displaying 'Nikki’s' text messages, voice notes, and other things. Producer, Jason Blum, also expressed his happiness by addressing the fact that people are interested in watching the film at home instead of purchasing it on a digital platform at home. Blum said:
“It’s great the audience is aware of it. You would think they would say, ‘I want to buy it at home.’ But they’re actually cheering for the movie to stay in theaters longer. People cherish the theatrical experience, and they’re willing to give up the convenience of seeing something at home to keep their local theater alive.”

While many people know Curry Barker today as a director, he also had a successful journey on YouTube for all this time. He started by posting videos with a New York Film Academy student, Cooper Tomlinson. Barker slowly started releasing short films on YouTube and TikTok. He has previously directed another horror film, Milk & Serial, which came out directly on YouTube in 2024. His next project after Obsession is Anything but Ghosts, which is also a horror film. However, a release date for the movie is yet to be finalised.
