Regarded as one of the greatest actresses in the history of Indian cinema, Nargis was known for being the undisputed queen of Bollywood. With blockbuster films like Awara, Shree 420, Barsaat, Andaz, Mother India, Hulchul and many others, Nargis had an array of blockbuster hits to her credit. It was on the sets of Andaz, when Nargis and Raj Kapoor had fallen in love with each other as he was smitten by her beauty and she too couldn’t resist his charm.
Raj was already a married man when he fell in love with Nargis. Being madly in love with him, she went on signing all the RK productions movies. Nargis was adamant to marry Raj, despite knowing that it was not legally possible. She was even ready to be his second wife and had also consulted many lawyers to seek help. However, things didn’t work out between them, and they parted ways, leading Nargis into depression. During that moment, she met Sunil Dutt, who saved her from the fire on the sets of Mother India. After a brief dating period, they got married.

Years later, in 1973, the RK banner produced the film, Bobby, introducing actress, Dimple Kapadia. The movie was a blockbuster hit and Dimple became a huge sensation overnight. Amid the success, a rumour started like a wildfire that Dimple was the love-child of Raj Kapoor and Nargis. Dimple’s striking features to Nargis gave momentum to the rumour.
On top of it, Raj Kapoor had kept Dimple’s introduction scene in the same manner he had met Nargis for the first time. Once in a throwback interview, Dimple rubbished the reports and called them crazy. Bashing the speculations, Dimple had said:
“That was the craziest rumour I have heard about myself. Can you imagine me being Sanjay Dutt's step-sister?"

According to actor cum anchor, Anu Kapoor, Nargis had once reacted to the rumour of Dimple Kapadia being her and Raj Kapoor’s love child. Revealing how the rumour was baseless and she didn’t have the faintest idea how the rumour started, Nargis had said:
“How, when, why these rumours started, I haven’t the faintest idea. All I can say is, whoever started them is a rotter with a very dirty mind. Just because Raj Kapoor’s conception of Dimple as ‘Bobby’ resembled what I played in ‘Awara’ and because of few similarities here and there. It’s not enough to jump to stupid conclusions.”
In the same interview, Nargis also revealed her family’s reaction to the nasty rumour and how it had affected her son, Sanjay. In her words:
“God forbid, but if such had been the case, I would never have disowned a daughter of mine. Dimple has been a very wise girl to treat the whole thing as a big joke. As for me and my family, my husband has ignored the whole thing, my daughters laughed it off. Only my son Sanjay was upset, but he’ll grow out of it. I don’t want to give it any more importance by speaking about it. I don’t want to feed such malicious gossip. I want it to die a natural death'.”
