Was Nancy Guthrie Abducted By Someone She Knew? Ex-FBI Official Says, 'Her Family Believes This..'

Nancy Guthrie's disappearance has become a major mystery for the investigators and the FBI in Arizona. It has been three months since she disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona, on January 31, 2026. Despite an intense investigation, there are no suspects, arrests, or breakthroughs in the case. Still, the forensic evidence and increasing public attention have kept the search for the 84-year-old in headlines. Meanwhile, a former FBI official has shared a new theory that could shift the investigation's focus.

Was Nancy Guthrie abducted by someone she knew?

Former FBI assistant director, John Miller recently sat down for a conversation on The Fairfax Files hosted by Michael Hershman. During the conversation, he shared that he believes Nancy Guthrie has been taken away by someone familiar with her and her home. According to him, the suspect is likely a local who knew Nancy's lifestyle, routine, and vulnerabilities. He suggested that the abductor might have carefully planned the crime after taking a note of Nancy's daily life. John explained that such cases often involve someone with a direct or indirect connection to the victim. In his words:

"I think the answer is, and I think that the Guthrie family believes this too, the answer is right there. The answer is in Tucson. This was probably something hatched locally by someone who thought, 'Here's an individual who is relatively defenseless, lives alone, is vulnerable, unable to put up a lot of resistance.'"

According to Parade, the ex-FBI official said that the suspect is most possibly from Tucson. He mentioned that Nancy's family also seems to hint that the suspect is someone familiar with the area. He pointed out that kidnappers often target people they know are more likely to be alone and unable to fight. Yet, their financial resources through their family connections are an ideal reason to commit the crime.

John shared that in similar cases, the kidnappers are usually some former workers, acquaintances, or people who had access to the victim's home. In turn, he thinks that Nancy's case has a similar pattern. According to his analysis, the suspect has studied the 84-year-old's routine and developed a ransom demand through cryptocurrency.

Nancy Guthrie might have 'fought back' with her kidnapper

Despite Nancy Guthrie's age and vulnerabilities, former FBI profiler, Jim Clemente mentioned that Nancy might have fought back against her kidnapper. He analyzed the pattern of blood stains found at Nancy's home, which strongly suggests she resisted someone. At the same time, blood stains at the front porch of her home suggest that she reportedly struggled at the doorway after realizing she was being forced out of her home. Jim also believes that the evidence hints she might have been physically assaulted or struck in the face or nose, which caused her to fall and bleed.

Further, investigators believe that there might be more than one abductor who was involved in taking Nancy away. In fact, the surveillance footage accessed by the FBI showed a masked person tampering with her doorbell camera before she disappeared. Yet, there is no update on the identity of that person. Meanwhile, another retired FBI Special agent Steve Moore, defended the investigators' decision to keep some details from their investigation private to avoid unnecessary chaos.
