Nagarjuna Akkineni can be justly recalled as one of his decade's most evergreen and charming actors. The actor, who has been a recipient of many awards and accolades, has not only won the hearts of fans down south, but interestingly, it was remake films in Bollywood which created quite a stir. In his personal life, the actor is married to his ladylove, Amala and is a proud father to his sons, Akhil and Naga Chaitanya.
Nagarjuna’s personal life began with his marriage to his first wife, Lakshmi Daggubati, the daughter of veteran filmmaker, Daggubati Ramanaidu, in February 1984. Their match was arranged by Nagarjuna’s father, a dear friend of Lakshmi’s father. The duo welcomed their son, Naga Chaitanya, on November 23, 1986. Unfortunately, soon after, their wedding hit a rough patch which turned irreconcilable to the extent that the duo parted ways in 1990.

After such a bitter experience in his personal life, Nagarjuna absorbed himself entirely in acting and started to shoot films back to back. Right then, he met his co-star, Amala Mukherjee, who frequented as his leading lady many times. It was reported that Nagarjuna was highly impressed with Amala’s dedication and punctuality, leading him to fall in love with her.
Interestingly, the romantic inclinations were completely one-sided from Nagarjuna until one day, when he did something special to warm up Amala’s heart. During the shooting of one of their films together, Nagarjuna learnt about the lead actress’s reluctance to step out of the vanity. So Nagarjuna personally went to Amala and found out that she was sobbing badly.
On asking her for the same, Amala mentioned that she was not comfortable with her set of costumes for the particular scene, as it appeared utterly goofy. Therefore, she did not want to wear it at all. While Amala’s innocence surely touched Nagarjuna, he assured her he would personally speak to the director and sort out the matter. This gesture won Amala’s heart forever, as she was touched beyond measure to see the kindness of such a superstar. After that, they became the best of friends.
Soon enough, the duo fell in love with one another and started dating. The fact that the audience loved their on-screen pairing so much also acted in their favour as they frequently worked in films together. Their on-screen chemistry gradually seeped into their real life as well. After a good few years of dating, Nagarjuna planned to propose to his ladylove, Amala, for marriage. In 1991, the duo went together on a trip to the U.S. that was nothing less than magical as he proposed to her on the trip itself.
In an interview much later in time, Amala had fondly remembered the way Nagarjuna had proposed to her. Recalling how the question of marriage was absolutely out of the blue, she mentioned:
“Well like movies, love and marriage also happened. Nag surprised me out of the blue and asked me to marry him. After all the euphoria and excitement subsided, I asked him, will we move to Hyderabad? he said, yes. I said, I don’t have to rush to work? he said, if you don’t want to, you need. You can do whatever you like to do.”

After such an enthusiastic proposal, Nagarjuna tied the knot for a second time with Amala on June 1992 in Chennai, which their families and close friends only attended. Their wedding surprised many, especially since both were at the peak of their careers. However, their special relationship and undying love mattered the most to them. Two years later, the couple welcomed their son, Akhil Akkineni. Fast forward to today, the couple is a warm family that also includes Nagarjuna’s son from the previous marriage, Naga Chaitanya.
Like every other couple, the marital life of Nagarjuna and Amala was filled with highs and lows. In an interview with a leading news portal, Amala Akkineni recalled one such anecdote from her personal life with her hubby, Nagarjuna, that led her to stop talking to him for ten days. She revealed how Nagarjuna had sent away her favourite pet Labrador for training without informing her. Mentioning how she was sad and upset about his decision taken without informing her, she mentioned:
“I waited for a week. Nag did not talk to me. After ten days or so, he realised that what I did was correct and understood the importance of training a dog. He spoke to me after that, but he always said he will never forgive me for sending it away for so long."
A few years after their blissful marriage, one turbulent gossip reportedly shook the foundation of Nagarjuna and Amala’s relationship. In the mid-90s, strong rumours were going around that Nagarjuna was reportedly dating his co-star and iconic Bollywood actress, Tabu. The duo had worked together in many hit Telugu films of the decade, such as Avida Maa Aavide, Ninne Pelladata, Sisindri and many others.
However, while the report was baseless, it had disturbed Amala and Nagarjuna’s marital life considerably. Nevertheless, the duo did not let this affect their happy life together and decided to tackle it maturely. In an interview with The Times Of India, Amala had opened up about that phase of her marital life and clarified the air about her husband’s alleged affair. In her words:
“Nothing will shake this belief. Nobody should bother what happens under my roof. I am happy. And before you ask whether my husband and I have discussed this – never. My home is sacred, like a temple and I don’t allow anything unpleasant from the film industry to come in, especially filthy gossip. I don’t encourage such talks. I feel it will contaminate my house.”
Fast forward to today, nearly 23 years after their marriage, the couple still hold up as one of the most-talked about evergreen couples ever!
