India's asset, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has made the nation proud yet again. Recently, on July 26, 2026, the decorated weightlifter secured India's first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Mirabai secured the win in the 48kg category with a total lift of 190kg. The historic victory marked her third consecutive gold medal win of the tournament. Her rare and laudable golden hat-trick has got her friends, family and fans thrilled.

The former World Champion, Mirabai Chanu has reestablished her legendary legacy of consistency with the latest Commonwealth gold win. With a career spanning decades, the star athlete has proven herself time and again. Amid her remarkable career growth, let's take a look at her early life, family, net worth and relationship status.

All about Mirabai Chanu's family, early life and career

Olympic medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu was born to a humble, tight-knit family in Nongpok Kakching, a small village situated about 20 kilometres from Manipur's Imphal district. They belong to the Meitei community and faced financial hardships in Mirabai's early life, making it difficult for her to pursue competitive sports. Yet her parents bestowed unwavering support on her and helped her fulfil her dream of becoming an athlete.

Mirabai's parents did odd jobs to support her and her five siblings. Her father, Saikhom Kriti Meitei worked as a lower-tier construction labourer for the Manipur Public Works Department (PWD). Her mother, Saikhom Ongbi Tombi Leima, ran a small tea and snack shop in their village for some extra income. Mirabai Chanu also lifted firewood as a toddler to help her family earn their livelihood. She is the youngest of the family, who was born on August 8, 1994 and will be turning 32 in 2026.

Interestingly, Mirabai once surprised her family by lifting a heavy bundle of firewood as a 12-year-old and walking several kilometres back home with it. The little Mirabai carried the heavy load even when her elder brother struggled to do so. That foreshadowed her future weightlifting career and glory. Notably, Mirabai Chanu didn't initially aim for the particular sport; instead, she dreamt of becoming an archer.

Mirabai developed her interest in weightlifting after she visited the Sports Authority of India centre at Khuman Lampak Stadium in Imphal. She went there for an archery session, but that did not take place, following which a dejected Mirabai discovered a weightlifting practice nearby and immediately fell for the sport. Inspired by legendary Manipuri lifter Kunjarani Devi, Mirabai Chanu decided to give it a go, and since then there was no turning back.

Mirabai's best career achievements include her Olympic silver win at Tokyo 2020, three Commonwealth gold wins in 2018, 2022 and 2026, and a Commonwealth silver win as a 19-year-old in 2014. Notably, Mirabai competed in the 49kg category before and transitioned to the 48 kg category in 2025. To maintain her weight ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the Indian weightlifter said that she "couldn't eat food and hasn't drunk water for 3 days." It showcases her dedication to the sport.

Does Mirabai Chanu have a husband? Know her net worth

Mirabai Chanu hasn't been married and is publicly known to be single. She is currently focused on her career and is set to achieve even more before deciding to slow down and get hitched.
