Mike and Dianna's private photos became the scandal of the year since they are both are married with kids, and despite that, the two were seen getting intimate. From their kissing photos to their private yacht photo, the nature of their relationship sparked a lot of backlash. As per Ben Strauss and Kalyn Kahler of ESPN, the head coach of the New England Patriots wanted to back Dianna's career.
It was revealed that Mike wanted to issue a stronger statement that could have defended Dianna's reporting ethics. A person who spoke with Mike revealed the same to ESPN. However, Mike and Dianna immediately issued statements denying having any personal relationship.
At that time, Mike Vrabel tried to end the controversy by stating that it was an innocent interaction and any 'suggestion' about the photo is 'laughable' and it doesn't deserve any response. However, Dianna decided to resign from The Athletic, and she initially stated that the photos do not represent the other six people with whom they were hanging out during the day.
She claimed that, like most journalists in the NFL, she was interacting with the source away from the stadiums and other venues. However, after two weeks, Mike addressed the media in a press conference. He began by thanking the members of the media for their patience with him as he remained silent on the situation. He said:
"I understand I could’ve addressed you guys sooner, but it was important to me to have a conversation with the players, which I did yesterday, very candidly. With that being said. I’ve had some difficult conversations with people I care about — with my family, the organization, the coaches, the players."
As per Dianna's former boss, they called her alleged affair with Mike Vrabel a clear violation of the newsroom standard. After she left The Athletic, a detailed investigation happened, and the news director, Mike Semel, published the findings in a report. It clearly stated that Russini's relationship with Vrabel was a violation of newsroom standards. No matter whether the relationship was romantic, it was a breach and should have been disclosed. The report stated:
"Russini's relationship with Vrabel was in clear violation of The Athletic's standards. Regardless of whether the relationship was romantic, it was a breach and should have been disclosed."
As per Semel, he went through 903 videos, and 204 episodes of her Scoop City podcast. He also interviewed her coworkers and listened to her off-platform appearances, and was not able to find a clear link that showed Diana used her position to give Mike Vrabel a leg up.
Dianna Russini has no plans to return to work after the huge scandal that dragged her husband into the matter, and even her innocent children, as people passed mean remarks about the DNA test. Many were waiting for her to speak the truth and share her side of the story, and when she did, Dianna made sure to share how it impacted her life.
After the scandal, The New York Times reached out to Dianna to give an interview about the scandal, and she agreed to it via text message. She revealed how the scandal destroyed her life and career. She also called herself a 'former journalist' and revealed that she had no plans to continue her reporting career.
