Investigators later found the plot was a frame-up orchestrated by Ian Diaz and Angela Connell. Both were convicted. Netflix’s A Toxic Love Story revisits the case, framing it as domestic abuse and a warning about manipulation in relationships. The case has recently witnessed a new update as a letter has been discovered that Michelle wrote for Ian.
Michelle Hadley’s letter was sent to the judge before Ian Diaz’s sentencing
Michelle Hadley, who was previously in a relationship with Ian Diaz, submitted a heartfelt letter to the court asking for a strict sentence before Ian Diaz’s sentencing. The letter was recently acquired by TMZ, which was sent by Michelle Hadley to the judge for consideration ahead of the decision on how many years Ian Diaz would serve.
Michelle Hadley recalled the time when she met Ian Diaz, saying that she was confident, happy, and optimistic. She said that she was a woman who believed that she had a future. However, she stated that her life changed because she was with a man who was dark, twisted, and malicious. Michelle continued by saying:
“I was a captive of Mr. Diaz long before I ever ended up in a jail cell. In fact, while the experience of being falsely arrested and imprisoned amounted to my worst nightmare, I have often told friends and loved ones this chilling truth: that I would take three months in jail over a single day spent in his company. I think it’s important for the court to understand the impact that Mr. Diaz has had on my life.”
Court records allege that Ian Diaz and his wife at the time, Angela Connell, worked together to destroy Michelle Hadley’s life. The pair allegedly placed Craigslist ads using Michelle Hadley’s address, soliciting a man for her rape fantasy, with the apparent intent that she would be assaulted.
Michelle Hadley was arrested on false charges and spent three months in jail before she was released. Ian Diaz received a 10-year prison sentence and is currently seeking to have the ruling overturned. Angela Connell was also sentenced to prison but has since been released.
Ian Diaz has been seeking a new trial in a petition
Ian Diaz submitted a pro se motion to the federal court requesting that his conviction be vacated or set aside in February 2026. He cited claims of ineffective assistance of counsel. The case is still pending before the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
The last document filed by Ian Diaz was entered in July 2026. In his filing, Ian Diaz contends that his trial lawyer did not properly investigate the case, did not challenge testimony he describes as false or misleading, and did not present evidence he believes would have weakened the prosecution’s obstruction of justice argument.
A central part of Ian Diaz’s argument focuses on testimony from Department of Justice Office of Inspector General Special Agent Jeremy Hunt. DOJ’s Jason Higley was also highlighted in the Netflix documentary. Ian Diaz claims the government presented deleted email accounts as proof of obstruction, even though investigators already had copies of those emails from prior search warrants.
In the Netflix documentary, the accounts reference fragments from an email account called “Lilith” that was allegedly used to stalk and send threats to Angela Connell. Ian Diaz argues his attorney should have highlighted those alleged inconsistencies at trial. His motion requests that the court vacate his conviction or order a new trial. These are Ian Diaz’s allegations alone and have not been confirmed by the court. The government has been directed to file a response according to the court’s briefing schedule.
