However, the legend passed away recently after facing a devastating avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, which struck on July 30, 2026.
Nirmal Purja’s last wish was left unfulfilled
Nirmal Purja was born on July 25, 1983, in Dana, a small village in Nepal's Myagdi District near Dhaulagiri, and now his entire village has fallen into silence after his tragic passing. His cousin, Kamala KC, has been inconsolable for the past four days as she is still coming to terms with her brother’s death. When she learned of his disappearance, Kamala refused to believe the news and has been visiting the ruins of Purja's home, where she once played with him.
The house where Nirmal was born had collapsed, and only the walls remain. When he last visited the place, he told Kamala that he wished to rebuild the house. He shared plans for the siblings to build a traditional-style house together. Recalling his last wish, which remained unfulfilled, Kamala told ANI:
"I would build the house, it is where I was born Didi (sister), he had told me. His brothers also had said okay to the proposal and also had asked me to clear the debris so that it can be constructed and I also cleared the site.”
All about Nirmal Purja's final expedition which ended his life
Nirmal Purja became the first climber to summit all 14 eight-thousanders, not once but twice, that too, without supplemental oxygen. He was also part of the historic all-Nepali team that completed the first winter ascent of K2 in 2021.
Just days before the tragedy, on July 27, 2026, Purja made his final X (formerly Twitter) post, expressing his desire to climb double and triple in total. In that haunting message, he only prayed for a "safe passage" to Broad Peak. He wrote:
"Broad Peak, I ask for nothing but safe passage up and back down. I take zero mountains for granted. Not one. The moment my foot leaves basecamp, it’s 100%. Always has been. Always will be. This one is dedicated to everyone who carried me here. Supporters. Critics. All of you. Without both sides, there is no fire. So thank you genuinely. My purpose has never been about me. It’s about what I represent. It’s about showing YOU that your own mountains—whatever they are—are climbable."
Tragedy struck on July 30, 2026, when the 43-year-old Nirmal Purja was hit by a massive avalanche at approximately 6,600 to 7,000 meters in height when he was climbing Broad Peak in Pakistan. Elite Exped, the expedition company he co-founded, confirmed on Saturday, August 1, 2026, that Purja and other members of the 10-person expedition had lost their lives in the disaster. The organisation described Nirmal as "one of mountaineering's greatest climbers" and a leader who "inspired millions through his courage, humility and unwavering belief that human potential is far greater than we often imagine."
