The relationship in question was with his Romancing the Stone co-star, Kathleen Turner. According to Douglas, the duo had kept it a secret for four decades.
Michael Douglas reveals unknown details about his relationship with Kathleen Turner
In his memoir, One Helluva Ride, Michael Douglas revealed that he and Kathleen Turner fell for each other while they were making the 1984 film Romancing the Stone in Mexico. At the time, the 82-year-old was separated from his then-wife, Diandra Douglas, with whom he shares a son named Cameron.
In Romancing the Stone, Douglas, in addition to playing the dashing adventurer ‘Jack Colton,’ was also a producer on the action-comedy. While he initially wanted Debra Winger in the role of the leading lady, things did not work out. He then went to lunch with Turner, who was a rising star back in the day, to talk about the role. As you already know, she landed the role of New York City journalist ‘Joan Wilder,’ who rescues her sisters from kidnappers in Colombia with the help of Douglas’ character.
Michael Douglas recalled that he and Kathleen Turner were instantly attracted to each other. On the other hand, things at home with his wife weren't good, with both of them having extramarital affairs. He wrote:
“Kathleen was smart, funny, and sexy, with a deep, sultry voice that became her signature. I instantly liked her, and we were immediately attracted to each other. Things at home were in a bad place. Diandra and I were both having extramarital affairs, including my recent romance with Diane Thomas [Romancing the Stone’s screenwriter].”

According to Douglas, problems between him and Diandra started when she would constantly ask him to change after their marriage. However, the actor never asked the same from her. He confessed that more than the strife in his marriage, what weighed on him was how their problems ended up affecting the son, Cameron, who was 5 years old at that time.
Douglas went on to confess that when he left his family to film in Mexico, he was still technically married, but separated. While filming, his chemistry with Kathleen Turner was already so strong that many speculated they were in a relationship. The pair kept denying it through Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile, War of the Roses, and The Kominsky Method. He added:
“The official story went as follows: Yes, we confessed, we had amazing chemistry. Yes, we were both, as Kathleen said, ‘terrible flirts,’ and yes, we were both tempted, but nothing ever happened between us. That was a lie.”
Douglas believed that it was a lie meant to protect his then-wife and son, “a lie we told the world for 40 years.” Kathleen Turner did her part in upholding the lie, as even a few years ago during an interview with PEOPLE, she claimed that she was yearning for Douglas and there was a “wonderful sexual tension” between them, but she knew he was married and couldn't have him.
But things were different in reality. Turner and Douglas fell hard for each other and began a relationship. Douglas stated:
“It wasn’t a fly-by-night affair; it grew naturally from how closely we were working together, how much pressure we were under, how much we respected and cared for one another, and how attracted we were to each other. Like every other guy in the world at the time, I was knocked sideways by Kathleen.”
Michael Douglas ended things with Kathleen Turner to go back to his then-wife
Even though Douglas and Turner never hit a rough spot in their relationship, things between them had to end soon. The actor said that even their film’s director and their co-star, Danny DeVito, were unaware of their affair and how he would sneak into Turner's hotel room every day after everyone fell asleep. But when Diandra brought their son down to Mexico, he immediately grew suspicious of them.

Diandra made it clear to Kathleen Turner that she and Douglas were still married, leading the latter to back off. Eventually, thinking about their son, the actor went back to his wife, but things were never the same between them. Meanwhile, even though Douglas and Kathleen ended things romantically, they remain friends to this day.
