Susan Dell first crossed paths with Michael Dell on a blind date in 1988. This chance encounter happened soon after Susan moved to Austin, Texas, to work in real estate. For the uninitiated, Susan is a fashion designer and philanthropist. The fashion designer and Michael met over a lunch organized by one of Susan’s clients and immediately liked each other.
Back then, Michael was a rising star in the business world. In an interview with Texas Monthly, Susan admitted that she had no idea who he was and was not even completely sure what his last name was. Recalling their first meeting, the philanthropist said they met for lunch at a restaurant in North Austin. Susan shared that soon after the meeting, she told her brother Steve that she had fallen for Michael.
In the same interview, Susan explained that most men she had dated before talked a lot about themselves and tried to impress her. However, the Dell CEO was different. According to Susan, he was humble and friendly. Susan said:
"Most men I dated talked about themselves a lot and tried to impress me. He was the nicest guy I'd ever met… I always knew I would marry the greatest guy in the world."
Michael proposed to Susan in the spring of 1989. The billionaire couple got married on October 28, 1989. Back then, Michael was 24, and Susan was 25. After their marriage, the couple welcomed four children: daughters Alexa, Kira, and Juliette, and son Zachary. The four kids grew up on a large family estate called 'The Castle'.

The couple has a shared love of philanthropy and co-founded the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation in 1999. In 2025, the couple pledged USD 6.25 billion to US President Donald Trump's Trump Accounts, which is an investment account for children under 18 in the US.
On October 7, 2026, at a White House press conference, Susan said that she and her husband, Michael Dell, have received many heartfelt letters from parents, children, and grandparents after their contribution reached millions of children's investment accounts. The philanthropist explained that many children have shared their dreams of becoming entrepreneurs, doctors, nurses, or engineers and starting their own businesses someday. Susan believes that just like money matters, helping them believe in themselves is equally important. She said:
"To every child across the country, these accounts are for you. We believe in you, and we want you to dream big because we know you can make your dreams come true."
