On October 9, 2026, Mike’s family announced the heartbreaking news of his death. They mentioned that while the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears' Super Bowl XX championship team, they considered him the heart of the family. An excerpt of the note can be read as:
"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike Ditka. Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever. With love and gratitude, The Ditka Family."

While the cause of death is unclear, Ditka battled health issues throughout his life, notably suffering a stroke in 2012 and a major heart attack in 2018. Mike began his professional football career in 1961 when the Chicago Bears selected him in the NFL draft. He won the Rookie of the Year award in his first season. For the uninitiated, Mike played for the Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, and Dallas Cowboys.
In 1963, he won an NFL championship with the Bears, and in 1972, he won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys. However, in 1992, Mike was dismissed by the Chicago Bears. After that, in 1997, Mike became the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. After coaching, he worked as a football analyst for NBC and ESPN.
