Matt Damon revealed that he met Luciana in Miami in April 2003, while he was shooting his film, Stuck on You, during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2011. It was love at first sight for Matt. Recalling the special moment from their first meeting, The Rip star told Metro that there was a beam of light shining down on Luciana. For the uninitiated, Luciana was a bartender, and Matt Damon visited the nightclub with his film crew to have a drink. Matt said, "I saw her across the room, and it was like there was a beam of light shining down on her — she was radiating joy. I was like, I have to talk to this person."

However, Luciana shared a rare glimpse of their first meeting during an interview with Vogue Australia. She joked about Matt’s saying a 'beam of lighting shining down on Luciana' and said that it was a nightclub, and thus, there were lights everywhere. She mentioned that Matt felt uncomfortable when people started recognising him, and thus he came behind the bar to escape the crowd. But when he tried to have a conversation with Luciana and put a condition on him. She told Matt that if he would help her make drinks, then only she would allow him to stand there. Recalling the moment, Luciana said:

"Matt's story is that he saw me across the room, and there was a light on me. And I'm like, 'Yeah, it was a nightclub — there were lights everywhere!' He had started getting recognised. So he came and hid behind the bar. He says, 'Oh, I saw you and I really wanted to talk to you.' I told him, 'You know, if you're going to be back here, you can't just be standing there!' He had trained as a bartender for a film years before, so he started making drinks. So it turned into a really fun night and then 15 years later, here we are!"

Luciana Damon and Matt Damon got married in December 2005 after dating for two years. While it was Matt’s first marriage, it was Luciana's second marriage. Earlier, she was married to a man with whom she welcomed a daughter named Alexia. After her marriage to Matt Damon, they welcomed three daughters, Isabella, Gia and Stella. In the same interview with Vogue Australia, Luciana shared that one of the traits that Matt loved about her was that when they first met, she was a mom to a daughter. Sharing how Matt accepted the way she was, Luciana said:

"We definitely had a connection right away, it was so easy to talk to each other, we were very comfortable with each other, and by the end of the night, he invited me to go out with his friends. But I was like, 'I can't, I have a four-year-old daughter, I'm not going anywhere' ... and that was one of the things he loved, that I had a daughter. He said, 'I love that you're a mum and that's your priority.' During a 2023 interview with Jake’s Takes, Matt Damon recalled a tough phase of his life, when a film hadn't worked well according to his expectations. He slipped into depression during that phase. It was his wife, Luciana, who became his pillar of strength during that time. Matt also credited his wife for encouraging him to be a seasoned actor. He was quoted as saying:

"Sometimes you find yourself in a movie that you know, perhaps, might not be what you had hoped it would be, and you're still making it. I remember my wife pulling me up because I fell into a depression. Luciana just said, 'We're here now.' And what being a professional actor means is you go, and you do the 15-hour day and give it absolutely everything, even in what you know is going to be a losing effort. If you can do that with the best possible attitude, then you're a pro. And she really helped me with that."
