Who is Mini Mathur's husband, Kabir Khan?
Kabir Khan was reportedly born on September 14, 1968, in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh (now Telangana). His father, Rasheeduddin Khan, was a political scientist and a Pashtun Muslim, while his mother, Leela Narayan Rao, was a Hindu and came from a Telugu-speaking family. He completed his schooling at Modern School Barakhamba Road, New Delhi. The filmmaker completed his graduation in Economics (Hons) at Kirori Mal College, Delhi University.
Later, Kabir did a course in filmmaking at AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Following his studies, Kabir began making documentary films. Then he made his feature film directorial debut in 2006 with the thriller, Kabul Express. The filmmaker is best known for directing Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, starring Salman Khan. Kabir also directed films including 83 and Chandu Champion.
Inside Mini Mathur and Kabir Khan's love story
Mini and Kabir met on a set. Speaking about their first meeting, Kabir said to Neha Dhupia on her podcast, "We have shot together, we met on a shoot. There was a channel called Home TV, and they were doing this very big show at that point in time where the first prize for that show was a flat in Bombay. I was a freelance camera person, and Mini was a presenter. We both went to the production house office to say that we might not be able to do the show because we both had date issues."
Back in 2015, during her live storytelling session titled Khan ya Khanna for the platform The Storytellers, Mini recalled what she felt when she had first met Kabir. She said:
"My CPR came in the form of Kabir Khan. He was very unlike any Mathur or un-Mathur boy that I’d ever met. He was a documentary filmmaker, not an engineer or a banker. He was a Khan, not a Mathur."
The couple tied the knot on February 28, 1998. In a 2025 interview with Vickey Lalwani, Mini shared the secret behind their long-lasting marriage. She mentioned that their 27-year marriage is based purely on friendship. She was quoted as saying:
"It has been like a breeze. I am not saying it’s picture perfect. It is not. We argue. We go through our highs and lows. But it’s like being married to your best friend. I think the basis of our marriage is solid, good ol’ friendship. Even when I fight with him, I really miss him as a friend while sitting in the same room. So, I end up being the first person to make up with him."
In the same interview, Mini shared that despite being very different personalities, they come together as a team. She mentioned that his emotional quotient is lower than hers. Mini added that she is an extrovert and he is an introvert, but it is a solid friendship that made their relationship beautiful. In her words:
"His EQ is lower than mine. Higher in films but lower in the relationship. I am an extrovert. He is an introvert. We are yin and yang. But it’s based on solid, goddamn friendship. And it really sometimes picks you up from stickiest situations."
