Kathrine Switzer created records years ago when she entered the Boston Marathon, becoming the first woman to participate in the competition in 1967. Kathrine’s participation led to a chain of events that created headlines. However, it also brought some changes in the later years, including the fact that women were allowed to participate in the competition from 1972. Two years later, Kathrine won the New York City Marathon, finishing first in 1974.
Kathrine Switzer recently revealed in an interview with PEOPLE that she has not stopped running and is covering 30 to 40 miles at the age of 79. Keep reading to know more about Roger!

Roger Robinson’s journey as a runner dates back to his childhood. He went to watch the Olympic Games with a couple from his neighbourhood and witnessed Emil Zatopek running on the track. Roger said in his book, When Running Made History, that this was the moment when he decided to do something in the same field. Back in 1966, Roger started participating in multiple events, including the 1977 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, Boston Marathon, New York City Marathon, and more.

He also had to undergo two knee replacements over the years. Despite these issues, Roger Robinson has not discontinued running. He won the title of Masters twice in 1981 and 1989, and won the over-80 division at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships. Roger has participated in around 50 championships worldwide.

Apart from running, Roger Robinson has been active in other fields at the same time. He has been a commentator and served in the position at the Commonwealth Games in 1974. Roger was also the stadium announcer for the New Zealand Athletics Championships, held in Wellington, in 2023. He has been an adviser to the Minister of Education during the ’80. He later started writing books, such as Oxford Companion to New Zealand Literature, Robert Louis Stevenson: His Best Pacific Writings, Running in Literature, and more.

Roger even covered his journey on the track in a book titled When Running Made History, which came out back in 2018. He additionally wrote the script for a documentary titled Marathon: A Hero’s Journey and has previously worked for Running Times. Robinson has also been a recipient of a few accolades, such as the Les Diven Media Award.

Kathrine Switzer and Roger Robinson were active in the same field for a long time. This also led to their first meeting, when they were chosen as the speakers for the Canberra Marathon, held in Australia in 1983. The duo had a little bit of knowledge about each other’s work. Kathrine recalled in an interview in 2014 that she got attracted to Roger’s voice when they first met, and they had a conversation for a long time.
The duo continued speaking through letters. But they were later able to meet each other frequently. The pair tied the knot at their residence in New Zealand in December 1987. Although Roger and Kathrine did not have any children together for all these years, the latter is the father of two children, born from his previous marriage.
