Yaoning “Mike” Sun’s legal problems date back to 2024 when he was taken into custody. Sun was charged for reportedly acting as an illegal agent of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) when he was the campaign manager for Eileen Wang, as per a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

He later pleaded guilty to the allegation in October 2025 and was sentenced to four years in February 2026. The legal documents stated that Yaoning allegedly acted as an agent of China between 2022 and 2024. Assistant Attorney General for National Security, John A. Eisenberg, said in a statement after the sentencing that Yaoning “Mike” Sun’s actions can be considered a violation of national sovereignty. Eisenberg’s statement also reads:
“For years, Sun received and executed taskings from Chinese government officials, distorted our public discourse by disseminating Chinese propaganda, and surveilled groups in the United States that China viewed as threatening its interests as part of a campaign of intimidation.”

Yaoning operated under the direction of the PRC government officials. He worked with individuals from the United States to further the PRC’s interests. This included multiple activities, such as organising a group to support the election of Eileen to public office, alongside advancing pro-PRC propaganda around the US.

Yaoning “Mike” Sun and Eileen Wang even launched a news website for the local Chinese American people. The website was active between 2020 and 2023. Notably, the duo was told by the PRC officials to share pro-PRC content. The pair previously went to meet a few people in 2022, who were part of a group dedicated to PRC interests.

After Eileen won the election, she reportedly told Sun’s co-conspirator, Chen Jun, to let the PRC officials know that she was a new star in the world of politics. According to the New York Post, Chen allegedly told the PRC officials that Eileen would oppose Taiwanese independence and send reports to China. Chen later told Sun to prepare a roster of politicians who had a good bond with Eileen. The legal documents stated that Jun even boasted to Beijing that they had the ability to push local U.S. officials to oppose Taiwanese independence.
Yaoning “Mike” Sun also prepared a report for PRC officials in February 2023. He aimed to get more financial help and assignments from the PRC government. The report featured his alleged experience, including that he served in the People’s Liberation Army. According to the press release from the U.S. Department of Justice, Sun claimed in the report that he organised trips bringing American officials and cultural personalities to China and was committed to opposing any hostile groups that could damage the relationship between China and the United States.

The legal documents stated that the report proposed using a portion of the professional team from the Los Angeles organisation to counteract certain forces. Sun additionally asked for funding worth USD 80,000 to stage a pro-PRC demonstration at a Fourth of July parade in Washington, D.C.

Furthermore, when Taiwanese President, Tsai Ing-Wen, visited Southern California in April 2023, Yaoning “Mike” Sun reported the President’s movements as they happened to a Los Angeles PRC consular officer. Sun then sought the officer’s permission to run an article covering the President’s visit on the website operated by him and Eileen Wang. Sun even sent some pictures to the officer, featuring those individuals who protested both for and against Tsai Ing-Wen.
