Meet Canadian PM, Mark Carney's Wife, Diana Fox, Respected Economist, Academic Author, And More

Mark Carney is one of the world's leading politicians right now. For those unaware, he was sworn into office as the Prime Minister of Canada a year ago, in 2025. Notably, he is the 24th Prime Minister that the country has seen to date. Prior to this, Carney has also served as leader of the Liberal Party and as a member of parliament for Nepean. Additionally, before his tenure as Prime Minister, he allegedly served as an informal advisor to former Canadian PM, Justin Trudeau during the COVID-19 pandemic. Within a year as Prime Minister, Mark Carney has pulled off some incredible feats like repealing the federal consumer carbon tax, relaxing environmental regulations, and enacting the One Canadian Economy Act, to name a few.  

Recently, Carney has been grabbing the headlines for his address at the 56th Annual Summit of the World Economic Forum (WEF). Claiming that the US-led global system of governance is enduring “a rupture”, the Canadian Prime Minister warned that the rules-based international order, which greatly shaped world affairs for years, is coming to an end. Interestingly, his speech came just a day before the US President, Donald Trump, was set to appear in front of the gathering in Davos. Now, with the entire world's attention on Mark Carney and his political front, let's take a look at who his wife, Diana Fox Carney, is.  

Diana Fox Carney first met Mark Carney at university  

According to a report by People, Diana Fox Carney and Mark Carney met for the first time while they were studying at the renowned Oxford University. Allegedly, the pair were both members of the university's ice hockey club. If reports are believed to be true, Diana was known at their university for “her ability to skate rings around her opponents and move effortlessly through the opposing defensive line.”  

On the other hand, her now-husband, Mark Carney, was the hockey team's goalkeeper and joint captain, eventually leading them to victories against Cambridge University in two consecutive years, 1993 and 1994. It was their shared love of ice hockey that brought them together and led to a relationship.  

Mark Carney's wife, Diana Fox Carney, is an economist and an author  

Diana Fox Carney was born in the U.K., where she also pursued her higher studies. According to reports, she holds several degrees from Oxford University, including a Master of Arts in philosophy, politics, and economics and a Master of Science in agricultural economics. Additionally, as if that wasn't enough, per her LinkedIn, Diana also holds a Master of Arts degree in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania. This just goes to show what a highly educated background she comes from.  

Drawing on her knowledge, Diana has established herself as an expert economist specialising in developing nations. Back in 2020, she acted as the Vice President of Canada 2020. For those unversed, it is a think tank which primarily focuses on several concerning issues related to climate, energy, inequality and social mobility. Later, Diana served as the Director of Strategy and Engagement for the Institute for Public Policy Research.  

Over the years, Diana has also tried her hand at writing. She has authored two academic publications, namely, Changing Public and Private Roles in Agricultural Service Position and Natural Resource Management and Institutional Change. Both of these were published in the same year, that is, 1998.  

Diana Fox Carney shares four children with the Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney  

Based on reports, Diana Fox and Mark Carney tied the knot in 1994. Over their years together, they welcomed four children: daughters, Cleo, Tess, Amelia, and Sasha. Their eldest, Cleo Carney, was in charge of introducing her father, Mark, before he addressed the nation in his victory speech as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada in March 2025. Calling him “focused and principled” as well as “funny and kind,” Cleo said:  

"I want Canadians to understand what kind of a man he is. And who is better qualified to speak on his character than his daughter? My father is, to his core, a man of commitment. He is unflinchingly dedicated to what matters. Canadians care about actions, and my father is a man of action...He has and always will show up for you. He cares about this great country." 

Diana Fox Carney has supported Mark Carney's role as the Canadian PM 

Diana is known to keep out of the spotlight for the most part; however, she did not let that stop her from appearing alongside her husband, Mark Carney, on the 2025 election night. Here, Mark was named as the new Liberal Party leader. During Mark's acceptance speech on March 9, 2025, she could be seen sitting in the very front row, donning a bright red suit, with her daughter, Cleo, by her side.

Diana was also present when Mark was sworn into office, first on March 15, 2026, and a second time, on April 28 of the same year, after a general election was held in the country. Being grateful for his wife's support throughout his campaign, Mark took to the stage and said: 

"Thank you, Diana, for your work on this campaign. Thank you, Diana, for the commitment and passion you bring to everything you do. Tonight simply would not have been possible without you."
