As per reports, the basketball player filed for divorce in Fulton County, Ga., on Thursday, July 30, 2026. Who is Brittney Griner's wife, Cherelle Griner?
Brittney Griner's wife, Cherelle Griner, is a lawyer. She began attending law school at North Carolina Central University School of Law in August 2019. Having graduated in May 2022, she celebrated the occasion by sharing a series of posts on Instagram. She revealed that she not only graduated from one of the six remaining HBCU law schools, but also successfully finished with cum laude honors.
Alongside photos of her wearing her cap and gown, Cherelle wrote, “This was not an easy feat, and truthfully I didn't even know if I could do it! Best believe, I'll never doubt me again.” At the time, Cherelle also shared a video of her wife, Brittney, wearing her university clothes. In the caption, she wrote, “This is clearly BG’s sweatshirt! She has more school apparel than me! Lol I love the way you support my dreams babe.”
Brittney and Cherelle met for the first time at Baylor University, where the former used to play before she joined the WNBA. Cherelle was also a student here and pursued a degree in political science and government. While Brittney graduated from the university in 2013, Cherelle finished school a year later. Celebrating their anniversary in June 2020, Brittney recalled the day they met in an Instagram post. She wrote:
“I will never forget the day I met you at Baylor in the sub area! You tapped me on my shoulder and told me I took your milkshake (still up for debate lol), and I was immediately blown away at your beauty!”
Brittney and Cherelle dated for many years before the athlete decided to propose in August 2018. In an IG post, she gushed about how she would never forget the day that she said I love you to Cherelle and that she will also never forget the day her wife accepted her proposal. The duo tied the knot a year later, on June 18, 2019.
It is worth mentioning that Cherelle had played a significant part in advocating for Brittney when she was detained and imprisoned in Russia. The WNBA star was reportedly sentenced to nine and a half years in prison in August. After Cherelle called on the US government and met with then-President Joe Biden, she ultimately succeeded in finding a way to bring her wife home. Sharing about how she felt when Brittney was in prison, Cherelle said:
"I'm like, in no world would I ever [have] thought, you know, our president and a foreign nation's president would be sitting down having to discuss the freedom of my wife. And so to me, as much as everybody's telling me a different definition of what BG is, it feels to me as if she's a hostage."
Brittney Griner files for divorce from Cherelle
According to court documents, Brittney and Cherelle have been separated since July 24, 2026. While she has not revealed many details yet, Brittney called their union “irretrievably broken.” In her divorce filing, the basketball player is also seeking joint legal custody of her and Cherelle’s two-year-old son, Bash.
