Mahesh Bhatt is one of the most prolific filmmakers of his time. Besides being an Indian film director, he also excelled in producing and screenwriting skills. With his magnanimous work in the history of cinema, Mahesh had also bagged numerous awards for the same. However, his film, Saaransh, starring Anupam Kher, Rohini Hattangadi, Madan Jain, and Nilu Phule, among others was one of the hugely loved ones post its release. So much so, that the film was also screened at the 14th Moscow International Film Festival, and it became India's official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film of that year.
Now, in a conversation with Anupam Kher on the film’s 19th anniversary, for the actor's acting school, Actor Prepares students, Mahesh Bhatt revealed many unknown anecdotes from the filmmaker-actor duo's bond. For the unversed, it was Mahesh Bhatt, who introduced Anupam Kher to the film industry, and their collaboration on the project brought such a huge success professionally. Now, during the chat, Mahesh explained how he used to tag along Anupam to various Bollywood parties, to make him acquainted with other celebrities. Mahesh said:
“I have always seen him as a large-hearted man. I used to make him tag along with me. There was a big stylist in our industry, who had a house in Pali Hill. And they’d host parties for stars there.”

Further, in the same conversation, Mahesh mentioned that he used to do so in order to connect Anupam with those who used to come to those Bollywood parties. Recalling one such event Mahesh mentioned that there was a person, who often used to throw parties, and he missed none at that time. He continued, “I was invited to one of those parties, and those days, I’d go wherever free alcohol would take me. I asked Anupam to come along. He brought his brother along as well. I introduced him to everybody, and we went and took seats in the balcony.” Interrupting Mahesh in between, Anupam added:
“Duniya bhar ke stars wahan par.”
In the same conversation, Mahesh then recalled an incident when he had taken Anupam and his brother to one such Bollywood party. Talking about the same, the filmmaker mentioned that although Anupam was very kind-hearted, he also had an inferiority complex. Thus, when an iconic actor like Rajesh Khanna entered the party, Mahesh noticed how Anupam was about to stand up and offer his seat to him. Witnessing this, Mahesh soon stopped Anupam and commanded him not to do so. Mahesh explained:
“Rajesh Khanna, the legendary star, walked in with his girlfriend. He had such a charisma about him. Anupam took one look at him and started to get up from his seat. And I commanded him to sit right back down. ‘Sit down!’ I said. He understood why I told him to sit down. I didn’t tell him to sit down to throw attitude. There were so many empty seats, why was he offering his? I saw a large-hearted man in him, but he had an inferiority complex.”

During the same chat, Mahesh then explained that at such a beginner phase, it was quite natural for Anupam to have an inferiority complex in front of other eminent screen idols. But that didn't hamper their bond. Instead, it made them stronger. Later, when Mahesh was working with Anupam for the film, Saaransh, the filmmaker was also on the verge of replacing the actor. However, just a moment before exiting the shoot, Anupam thought of showing his mind to him. And then, Mahesh understood Anupam's passion and anger. Following this, the filmmaker decided to get him back in the film, and the rest became history.
