The documentary follows the high-profile Ohio criminal case of Mackenzie Shirilla, a 17-year-old (now 21), who was convicted of dual murder of her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their friend, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan.

Despite being locked up in prison, Mackenzie Shirilla’s supporters are using her Instagram account to share updates about her. Recently, her social media account featured a selfie of Mackenzie from jail, in which she pouted and posed. Her well-groomed eyebrows, tinted cheeks and glossy lips revealed that Mackenzie is keeping up her diva image in prison as well.
Her supporters uploaded her recent picture and revealed that Mackenzie is trying to do better every day and holding on to hope even after the court denied her request for post-conviction relief. The post further mentioned that the request was rejected because it was submitted one day past the deadline.
The post mentioned that her appellate lawyer missed the deadline, filing it one day late because of a leap year. Despite all the shortcomings, Mackenzie and her family will continue to pursue every legal step for a ‘fair re-trial’.
Why was Mackenzie Shirilla convicted?
Mackenzie Shirilla’s case dates back to 2022, when a 17-year-old Shirilla drove a Toyota Camry through Strongsville, Ohio, with her boyfriend, 20-year-old Dominic Russo, and their friend, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan. She crashed the car into a commercial building. Reports suggest that she was driving 100 miles per hour, and the crash took the lives of both Dom and Davion, although she herself survived.
Since she was the sole survivor and a toxicology report stated that there were no traces of alcohol in her system, an investigation began. Investigators cited the absence of skid marks or signs of braking attempts as evidence and argued that the crash was deliberate. Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim Troup told the court that the teen wanted to murder Russo after their months-long fling fizzled out.
Soon, Mackenzie was convicted of four counts of murder, four counts of felonious assault, two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, and one count each of drug possession and possessing criminal tools.
Netflix’s documentary, The Crash, featured Mackenzie Shirilla speaking for the first time after her sentence. In the interview, Shirilla looked her best despite being in prison and serving her sentence. Many pointed out how she didn’t look like a convict at all, and the confidence with which she answered the questions also raised many eyebrows.
During her stay in jail, Shirilla had zero remorse and often displayed her diva demands while making calls to her mother, Natalie Shirilla. She complained about the food. Her ex-prison girlfriend, Shyann Topping, told U.S. Sun that Shirilla brought her own food, paid for with money her parents gave her. As per reports, Mackenzie also demanded her iPad from her mom.
