Beloved Quebec actor Marc Messier took his last breath on July 7, 2026, following a brief illness. The 78-year-old actor-comedian was best known for his work in the French classic Les Boys, and his passing sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans, politicians, and colleagues, who celebrated his decades-long legacy in television.

Messier's death marks the end of a legendary career marked by decades of acclaimed performances across television, film, and theatre. Hours after the news of his death surfaced, his longtime former partner, Lyne Ste-Marie, broke her silence via a short Facebook message.

Marc Messier and Lyne Ste-Marie shared a 21-year relationship

Ste-Marie and Marc Messier were one of Quebec's most visible long-term couples, spending 21 years together before going their separate ways in March 2020. Their split was described as amicable, and neither has ever spoken badly about their relationship.

Being the actor's longtime partner was not the only identity of Lyne Ste-Marie. She has long been a popular face of Quebec television as a weather presenter and TV columnist for Groupe TVA. Before her broadcast career, she worked internationally as a professional model (1985–1998) and even occasionally took on minor acting roles in shows like Scoop II and Les Boys IV.

Popularly known as "the Red Tornado", Ste-Marie is now a popular digital creator and beauty blogger who has remained a trusted beauty expert and contributor for major platforms like the Marina Orsini show on Radio-Canada, Bel Age magazine, and 7 Jours.

On July 7, 2026, hours after reports of Messier's death broke on news outlets, Ste-Marie took to her Facebook account, confirming the tragic loss. She left a brief but emotional Facebook message, acknowledging the overwhelming support she had received. "I've seen all your messages. I'll read them soon," she wrote, offering a quiet glimpse into her grief without elaborating further.

While the former couple largely kept their family life out of the spotlight, they occasionally spoke about their children and the joys of parenting. Though they never officially married, they were no less a married couple who worked as a team through fame and the challenges that came with it.

Marc Messier's views on fatherhood

In their 21-year relationship, Messier and Ste-Marie welcomed two children. Their son, Félix Messier, was born in 2003, and their second, Jeanne, arrived in 2007. The actor was also father to Gabrielle Dubuc-Messier, his eldest daughter from a previous relationship. Together, the children grew in a blended family dynamic.

In one of his rare interviews about family life, Messier reflected on becoming a father later in life, saying he was better equipped emotionally and financially than he had been in his younger years. In a 2025 interview, the actor spoke up about becoming a father in his fifties:

"When you’re 50 or 60, you’re obviously more settled in life. Although it was still quite difficult, because I had my daughter the year I was working the most. That was a bit complicated for my partner at the time. ... But I only have fun with my children now! They are sources of love; I love them very much, and they love me. We’re very happy together."

The actor shared an especially close bond with his son Félix, saying he could make him laugh so hard "he could pee his pants." Even after his breakup with Lyne Ste-Marie, he remained very much involved in his children's lives.

Who was Marc Messier?

Messier was one of Quebec's most recognizable performers over a career spanning more than five decades. He was celebrated for acclaimed productions such as Broue, La petite vie, Lance et compte and the Les Boys franchise. Messier won multiple Gémeaux and Artis awards and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2025.

Friends and collaborators remembered him as both an exceptional actor and a generous colleague. Claude Meunier called him "a brother," while Les Boys co-star Rémy Girard lamented the growing number of losses among the franchise's original cast.

Regarding Messier's surviving family, he leaves behind his three children and an extended family that deeply cares about one another. May he rest in peace.
