Lucy Letby's doctor boyfriend worked with her
Dr Mark Deakin was a consultant pediatrician who worked with Letby at the Countess of Chester Hospital. During that time, Lucy was convicted of murdering reportedly seven babies and had attempted to murder seven more babies.
Dr Mark, at the age of 53, reportedly collapsed inside his car after he was dismissed from Alder Hey Children's Hospital located in Liverpool. He reportedly died on July 3, 2026, and was also admitted to intensive care. During Lucy's trial, his identity was protected as restrictions were imposed. Now, after the doctor's demise, those restrictions have been lifted.

Why was the identity of Lucy Letby's doctor boyfriend lifted?
Dr Deakin was previously granted anonymity, but now his name and photo may be used. The reporting restrictions after his death were lifted. The Court of Appeal had lifted the anonymity order. Lord Justice Singh stated that he had received moving representations from Deakin's family and also expressed condolences to his shocked wife and family.
However, the restrictions cannot be maintained on the grounds of open justice and the 'right of the media to report fairly on court proceedings'. According to a report by the Daily Mail publication, the judge shared:
"In the sad circumstances which have now arisen, when [Mr Deakin] is no longer alive, the rationale of the underlying order made by Goss J (Letby’s trial judge) and the orders made by the High Court and continued by this Court, is no longer relevant. In those circumstances, it is no longer necessary and proportionate to continue the restrictions on the principles of open justice and freedom of expression."
The circumstances surrounding Deakin's last days have drawn all the attention to his connection with the former neonatal nurse Lucy. He was sacked from Alder Hey Children's Hospital back on June 23, 2026. This was because he breached a disciplinary process related to his conduct with Letby.

The circumstances surrounding Deakin’s final days have brought renewed attention to his complicated connection with the former neonatal nurse. He was dismissed from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital on June 23, 2026, following a disciplinary process concerning his conduct involving Letby.
During the inquiry, it was reported that the former pair had exchanged more than 1,000 Facebook messages and that Deakin had also helped Letby to get a placement at Alder Hey Hospital. This was after she was suspected of murdering babies.
Deakin had then shared that he was misled or maybe manipulated by Letby and was fooled into giving her information related to the infants she attacked.
Notes discovered at Letby's house contained references to Deakin. She had expressed words of affection towards him. Letby may have created medical emergencies, prompting Deakin to respond. Later, Letby did not acknowledge the relationship and stated that he was a trusted friend, not her romantic partner. She denied being in love with him.
Speaking of Letby, she has always claimed innocence. Reportedly, she has been given 15 years of life imprisonment. Letby's convictions are reviewed by the Criminal Cases Review Commission. During her criminal trial, which has been the longest murder trial in UK history, Deakin said that he was given special measures and also anonymity. Many of the texts exchanged between Lucy and Deakin were shown to the jury. An investigation into Deakin's death will now take place.
