Actress Kate Beckinsale is getting candid about her mental health. Taking to social media, she recently spoke about how difficult it is to navigate post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is worth mentioning that Kate’s post came as she struggles to cope with the loss of her mother, Judy Loe.

Kate Beckinsale opens up about PTSD

On September 2, 2026, Kate Beckinsale shared a video on Instagram where she openly spoke about PTSD and how it is a subject that is barely understood or studied. This is especially the case among women. Before sharing the video, the actress posted multiple IG Stories about her late mother, Judy Loe, and how she struggles with grief. She said:

“There are men and women and children who have seen such absolute horror or experienced such absolute horror that their nervous system is permanently altered as a result. And a lot of those people become incredibly good at masking it. And it’s sad because they become so good that they get no grace whatsoever.”

The actress claimed that these people get up every day and go to work, look after their kids, and provide for their family. They laugh and pretend to be a fun person. However, in reality, these people barely sleep for over an hour as they are awakened by nightmares. Kate said that their PTSD can be triggered by anything, be it smells, sounds, thoughts, or feelings. And once it is triggered, they would end up in a place “that is actually like hell.”

Further in the video, Kate said that is exactly why people should be kinder, as nobody truly knows what the person opposite them is going through. In her words:

“Given the fact that it’s invisible and you can’t know, maybe err on the side of being gentler with people, being kinder. It really is true that when you haven’t walked a mile in someone’s shoes - however fancy you think the shoes are - you have absolutely no idea what they might be carrying, masking, dealing with day and night.”

People who struggle with PTSD, Kate said, are always on their own, which makes them the loneliest people. She explained that they are “alone with a level of horror” that is not compatible with life. Still, these people don't give up and continue to live their lives in the best way possible.

Kate Beckinsale has been ‘suffering’ after the loss of her mother, Judy Loe

Ever since Kate’s mother, Judy Loe, passed away in July 2025, she has been open about how much she is ‘suffering.’ For those unaware, the actress’ mom died after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. At that time, Kate said that her mother “died in her arms.” Since then, she has been trying to cope with the incident’s “shock and trauma.”

In an emotional video that Kate posted in December 2025, she reflected on the experience. She confessed that 2025 was a particularly hard year for her as it was the last year her “incredible mum was on this planet.”

Dealing with her mom’s loss caused her to eat very little, resulting in her recent weight loss. While crying in the video, she said:

“I watched my 31-year-old father die of a huge heart attack, and then I watched my stepfather die, and I watched my mother degenerate and die. Such an incredible amount of suffering, and what I will say, it doesn’t make you feel very hungry.”

Kate clarified that it is quite different from anorexia, where one is starving. Instead, it feels like your body is shutting down from the shock and trauma. Her video made it clear how much she suffered from watching the deaths of her loved ones.
