'Love Is Blind' Star Jax Breaks Silence On Calling Off Engagement, Stew Claims He Was 'Blindsided'

The Netflix reality dating series introduced dozens of single men and women from Boston to try to answer one question: Is love truly blind? For the unversed, men and women on the show start off by going on blind dates where they have conversations in pods without seeing each other. The couples can only meet face-to-face after a marriage proposal is accepted.
Contestants Jacqueline “Jax” Guelli and Scott “Stew” Stewart got engaged in this manner but were quick to call things off. Now, in a new interview, the former couple are opening up about their short-lived engagement.
Jax reveals what went wrong with Stew, leading to the end of their engagement
Jax and Stew, who are both Boston natives, formed a connection in the Love is Blind pods after they realized they both appreciate the finer things in life. Jax initially had some reservations about the fact that Stew has never been in love in the 34 years of his life. But despite this, Jax went on to accept his proposal, leading to a face-to-face meeting.
However, by episode 4 of the Netflix dating show, Jax and Stew’s romance quickly unraveled. Stew seemed thrilled to meet his fiancée, but Jax confessed at the time that she did not feel the same connection with him. She ultimately decided to leave the experiment without speaking to Stew again.
Following this, in separate interviews with PEOPLE, Jax and Stew opened up about their highly different reactions to their emotional reveal. Jax confessed that doubts had already started to creep into her mind before she saw her fiancé. She said:
“I had doubts because of the proposal. So that's when I started to see some cracks in how I felt, and it started to feel wrong then.”
For those who already watched the Love is Blind episode, Jax’s decision to break off the engagement appeared sudden and came as quite a shock. Jax explained that in reality, she had already begun questioning whether their relationship was right for her. Her concerns about their relationship only intensified when they met face to face. She said that she “had to go” when she realized that there was no connection or chemistry there. In her words:
“So I was already on edge that this could not possibly be right. When we did actually meet, it was incredibly intense and overwhelming for me. And I think when I sat down, I kind of realized, you know, there’s no chemistry or connection here. And I had to go.”
Now that she is looking back at the moment that Stew proposed to her, Jax admitted that it was the biggest turning point in their relationship. She shared that at first everything started off “really lovely.” But she realized that their conversation became too focused on “superficial” things instead of their emotional connection. Jax said, “But he did kind of…I wanted it to be more about me and a little bit more romantic.”
Stew says he was caught off guard when Jax broke their engagement
During his interview with PEOPLE, Stew revealed that Jax breaking up with him and ending their engagement came as a complete surprise. He said that he was “absolutely blindsided in the moment” and “did not anticipate that.” He added:
“I didn’t see it coming. Definitely caught me off guard. I mean, that was such an emotional day. I proposed to this person, sight unseen. The doors open, and you see them cross the red carpet. You walk up and greet them, and it’s just so overwhelming.”
However, despite the way things ended between them, Stew made it clear that he does not hold any resentment toward Jax. He said that everyone kind of deserved a little grace in hindsight.
