Now that Season 1 of the show has come to an end, let's take a look at what happened and what's in store for Season 2. Warning: Spoilers ahead!
Little House on the Prairie ending explained
All seemed keen with the townsfolk during the dance when two men started shouting outside. 'Russell Kind' screamed at 'Eli' and punched him in the face, saying, " He's a snake! He lured us all here to watch us get thrown out of our homes." The deal with the Osage is complete, and the government will kick all the newbies off their claims unless they pay up in the next two weeks. While the Homestead Act isn't good in Independence now that the government has bought the land, the government now seeks a return on its investment.
"Eli and his railroad sold us a lie! And now we’re left with the bill", 'Russell' explains to 'Charles' as the government demands USD 1.50 an acre, a task that is impossible for 'Charles'. Anyone who doesn't have it will be kicked off the island, and as thunder rumbles in the background, 'Charles' realises what it means for his family. 'Eli' offers to help him by making him a foreman on the railroad. However, he would have to leave his family for a year. Nonetheless, disgusted by 'Eli', he refuses to shake on it.
We later see 'Caroline' meet 'Charles', and he tells her that he only has enough to buy back 10 acres. They can sell all they have and buy more, or she could take the job. However, he admits they didn't come all this way to be apart. As the conversation unfolds, smoke emerges in the distance, from a prairie fire. The townsfolk jump into action, digging a ditch to protect the town, and just as it seems to engulf it, the wind shifts and the fire dies down.
However, the town is not left without any losses; while 'Charles' and family find their home standing, their crop is destroyed, leaving them with no job, no money, and no crop. The 'Ingalls' family must begin again. 'Caroline' and 'Charles' decide to leave Independence. The girls try to offer the money they had won in the contest, but it's not enough to help.
As the 'Ingalls' share their final meal with their friends, it's sad to see them leave everything they've built behind. However, there is another bittersweet moment as 'Mary' shares a first kiss with 'Caleb', and 'Laura' promises to write to 'Good Eagle'.
How does the ending of Little House on the Prairie Season 1 set the stage for Season 2?
The next morning, the 'Ingalls' clan heads out, leaving their little house behind and riding off on their covered wagon. However, as they head out, they are met by 'John Edwards', who decides to join them, much to the delight of all the 'Ingalls'. He also shares where they could go next and says, "My wife’s cousin lives in Minnesota. Town called Walnut Grove. Husband owns a store there. Heard the land is good and the people are kind."
He shows the family a sketch of the Oleson General Store in Walnut Grove. As everyone smiles, 'Charles' looks to his friend and nods, "Lead the way", bringing Little House on the Prairie Season 1 to an end, and setting the stage for Season 2, which could explore their lives in a little town called Walnut Grove.
