John Cena is back to leave an impression with his acting skills. Matt Spicer’s comedy film, Little Brother, is finally out now on Netflix. Featuring Eric Andre as the second lead, the movie tries to bring a different concept, where the normal life of a realtor is impacted by the arrival of another man, who has participated in a program.

Considering that it is the weekend, Little Brother can surely be a good watch for those who have been die-hard fans of John Cena. But the story has its own issues that cannot be ignored, even if someone is glued to the screen for 100 minutes. Keep reading to know more!

Lead pair sparks, but don’t expect any explosions

Little Brother

The entire pitch of Little Brother rests in John Cena’s character, ‘Rudd,’ colliding with ‘Marcus,’ played by Eric Andre. On paper, things look perfect. John brings a coiled, military-grade composure, and Andre can be spotted with a feral, no-boundaries energy. But when they appear together, anyone will understand why the film was eventually made. John plays his role not as a cartoon stiff, but as a man whose entire identity is laminated. Andre doesn’t just do bits - he treats ‘Rudd’s’ life like bubble wrap to pop.

Little Brother

The problem here is that the film is seemingly scared of its own casting. Andre gets the space to be uncomfortable, invasive, and exhausting, but it rarely lets him be truly unhinged till the credits roll. On the other hand, John gets a chance to be more vulnerable and show his reactive side, compared to the roles that he has usually portrayed. The issue is that the direction keeps everything at a simmer when it should boil over.

Little Brother

The restraint does have an upside. By not turning ‘Marcus’ into a nonstop gag machine, the film forces audiences to sit with how genuinely disruptive he is. The comedy is taken from social cringe and broken norms. But if anyone wants to see Andre unleashing himself on screen, they are going to spend half the runtime waiting for a gear the movie never shifts into.

A familiar storyline is saved due to good performances

Little Brother

Little Brother follows a particular template in terms of the main plot. A man is having a perfect life until a chaos agent arrives. Everything falls apart, which is followed by an apology speech and reconciliation. This sounds familiar. The script sometimes feels like it knows the reality but winks at it and does not commit itself to parody. It’s not cynical to deconstruct studio comedies and not earnest at the same time to transcend them.

Little Brother

But the film saves itself through the chaos that is introduced due to ‘Marcus.’ He destabilises ‘Rudd’s’ sense of self. A ruined client dinner or a trashed living room are the symptoms, and the real damage is to ‘Rudd’s’ belief that life can be managed like a listing. When the film leans into the idea that control is its own kind of delusion, it finds teeth. When it retreats to montages and obvious beats, it loses them.

Little Brother

The second act drags because it repeats the same procedure of ‘Marcus’ ruining everything and ‘Rudd’ melting down without escalating much. The third act recovers by refusing to make ‘Marcus’ a lesson or a saint. He is still a problem, and this honesty keeps the ending from feeling like it was created by a machine, even if the road to get there was made a long time ago.

A streaming comedy that is held back by its own caution

Little Brother

Overall, Little Brother feels more like a character study instead of a Netflix comedy. It’s about curated lives and what happens when someone kicks over the display case. John Cena and Eric Andre share a good chemistry on screen, and the film is at its strongest when it trusts to carry certain scenes instead of chasing bigger gags. But trust is the main problem here. Little Brother feels like it was focus-grouped to be edgy enough for streaming, without risking alienating anyone. This is what makes the film watchable, as it is sharp and well-acted.

Little Brother

It is still less memorable, and the fans of Eric Andre might seek more anarchy. Although John Cena brings some new shades, it cannot be described as a reinvention. The film delivers a lot in terms of watching something at home. The cringe is intentional, the leads are committed, and the theme about perfection versus mess lands. However, it could have hit harder. As it stands, it’s a controlled experiment in disruption, which is ironic, given the subject matter.
