While prosecutors believe that it was a preplanned murder, Lindsay's defense team has argued, claiming that the former nurse was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
What were the possible reasons for Lindsay Clancy to kill her three kids?
Lindsay reportedly heard a man's voice, which instructed her to kill her kids. During the recent court proceeding, Dr. Kirk Heilbrun, a rebuttal witness, described Lindsay's mental state and the possible reasons that might have led the mom of three to kill her kids. Lindsay reportedly strangled her three kids to death. During the recent proceedings, Dr. Kirk Heilbrun, who evaluated Clancy for over three days in April 2026, revealed that he diagnosed her with Bipolar II disorder, while adding that she didn't have any manic episodes.
The psychologist further mentioned that there could be two reasons that Lindsay Clancy killed her kids: one could be that she thought her kids would suffer without her, or she might have experienced acute psychosis. When Patrick Clancy found her in their yard and asked what she had done, Lindsay said, 'I tried to kill myself'.
According to Dr. Kirk, this comment was inconsistent with psychosis, as had it been hallucination or psychosis, then she might have said, 'I did what I had to do' or 'I did what the voice said'. With this statement, the psychologist ruled out the latter possibility that Lindsay killed her kids due to acute psychosis. According to him, Lindsay heard the voice for around 18 minutes and gave an inconsistent account of what she was instructed to do.
During the same proceedings, Dr. Kirk revealed that Lindsay might have killed her kids as part of what he described as 'altruistic filicide'. The psychologist further revealed that Lindsay believed that killing her kids would allow all of them to stay together. Earlier, it was revealed that while strangling her kids, Lindsay told her kids, 'Go to God, baby. Go to God.' Dr Kirk's testimony was cut short because, in one of his responses, he mentioned Lindsay's Catholic faith.

The shocking incident happened back in 2023. Lindsay's health reportedly started deteriorating when she gave birth to her youngest child. If the reports are to be believed, on the day she killed her children, she asked her husband to pick up food and also to stop at a medical shop. Patrick even called her from the shop. Upon returning, Patrick was met with an awkward silence and a mess inside their house, and felt that something was not right.
To mention, Lindsay earlier told him, as well as her mom, that she had thoughts of harming her children. However, Patrick then found Lindsay in the yard. She tried to take her own life by jumping from the second-story window. When Patrick asked about the children, she revealed that they were in the basement. After reaching there, Patrick found his three kids left strangled with a resistance band.
