Lance McCullers Jr. is one of the most recognisable faces when it comes to Major League Baseball (MLB). At present, he is hogging the spotlight after it was revealed that the Houston Astros are finalising his trade to the Milwaukee Brewers. It is worth mentioning that Lance has spent all his big league seasons with the team. Now, with the focus on the baseball player, here's a look at when he and his family got death threats.

What did Lance McCullers Jr. say about him and his family getting death threats?

Lance McCullers Jr. once revealed that he and his family were subjects of death threats made on social media. An Astros team spokesperson revealed that they had notified the Houston Police Department and Major League Baseball security about the threats. Lance himself addressed the threats by saying that while he understands fans can be pretty passionate when it comes to baseball and love the Astros. However, this did not mean that they should threaten to kill his kids.

He also revealed that there had been several times over the years that they got such threats. Lance said that the part he couldn't accept was bringing his kids into this. He was quoted as saying:

"I understand people are very passionate and people love the Astros and love sports, but threatening to find my kids and murder them is a little bit tough to deal with. So, just as a father, I think there have been many, many threats over the years aimed at me, mostly, and I think actually one or two people from other issues around baseball actually had to go to jail for things like that. But I think bringing kids into the equation, threatening to find them or next time they see us in public they're going to stab my kids to death, things like that, it's tough to hear as a dad."

For those unaware, Lance McCullers and his wife, Kara, have two young daughters together. When the incident happened, Lance was making just his second start since Game 3 of the 2022 World Series. This is because he was battling several right-arm issues.

Apart from Lance, his manager Joe Espada also addressed the death threats. Visibly upset at what was going on, Joe claimed that the only reason people were sending the threats was that they didn't like his performance. He said that since he, too, is a father, it was driving him crazy that he even had to address this topic. Additionally, he was surprised that they were dealing with this, considering all that Lance had done for the Astros. In his words:

"There are people who are threatening his life and the life of his kids because of his performance. It is very unfortunate that we have to deal with this. After all he's done for this city, for his team, the fact that we have to talk about that in my office -- I got kids too, and it really drives me nuts that we have to deal with this. Very sad. Very, very sad.”

Joe added that since Lance had not pitched in 2 and a half years, it was going to take him a bit of time to get him going. While that was fine, giving threats was something that can't happen. He reiterated that he was “really upset that this can happen to athletes.”

Lance McCullers Jr.’s trade

For those who don't know, Lance McCullers had been on the injured list because of a shoulder impingement since May 2026. He had missed the entirety of the 2023 and 2024 campaigns due to his arm issues. While he did return to the mound last year, he struggled to a 6.51 ERA in 16 regular-season appearances. This is why the Astros are finalising Lance’s trade to the Milwaukee Brewers. As of now, the full terms of his trade have not been disclosed.
