According to the death certificate, Kris Jenner’s mom Mary Jo 'MJ' Shannon died of acute cardiopulmonary arrest. A copy of the certificate obtained by US Weekly stated that acute respiratory failure and metastatic lung cancer also contributed to Mary’s death. According to the death certificate, Mary had been fighting lung cancer for months before she died, but it's unclear when exactly she was diagnosed. Kris Jenner’s mother had previously survived both breast and colon cancer.
Earlier, in an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim Kardashian revealed that the radiation from Mary’s treatment had caused intestinal damage. The death certificate confirmed Mary died at an L.A. hospital on July 16, 2026 and was cremated on July 23, 2026. It also revealed that no autopsy was done after she died.
Kris Jenner paid a heartfelt tribute to her mom, Mary Jo 'MJ' Shannon
On July 16, 2026, Kris Jenner took to her Instagram handle to share a beautiful picture of her mom, Mary. Along with the snap, Kris paid a heartfelt tribute to her mom. She expressed her grief over her passing and bid adieu to her mom. She remembered the lessons that Mary taught her. She wrote:
"Today, we said goodbye to my beautiful Mommy MJ. There are no words that could ever capture what she has meant to me or the heartbreak of having to say goodbye. My mom was the heart of our family. She taught me everything that truly matters… to love your family fiercely, to be kind, to show up for the people you love, and to never take a single moment together for granted. She taught us that family is everything. She showed us how to love unconditionally and how to find joy in the little moments."
Kris shared that Mary taught her how to face life’s challenges with faith and resilience. She thanked her mom for every sacrifice and for loving her and her siblings with a full heart. Kris added how she felt her mom’s presence in her kids and grandchildren. She expressed her gratitude to God for making Mary her mom. An excerpt from her note can be read as:
"Our hearts are broken, but we find comfort knowing that love like yours never truly leaves us. Your love will live on in our family, in our traditions, in every moment we are together, and in every life you touched. When I look at my kids and my grandkids, I will forever see pieces of you in all of us. Every memory, every moment, every blessing- it was all because of you, and I will forever thank God every single day for making you my mommy. My heart is broken into a million pieces… thank you for giving me the greatest childhood, and oh what a beautiful, blessed life… I love you forever, Mommy. Thank you for giving us everything."
